the beautiful south

i like them more than the music, and I like their attempts to do the poison in a pretty pill thing in chart terms.

But the odd song is still good, especially Let Love Speak Up, which is gorgeous

I think the first two albums were great. But after that they became just too radio friendly and not wry enough, which is why, despite being shite, Blue Is The Colour is a great album. I remember a friend's Dad being apoplectic because it was full of swearing and he wanted something nice to listen to in the car and his mother was there and he had to turn it off and he should write and complain. Upsetting people like that forgives even turgid toss like Perfect 10.

Paul Heaton's a very underrated songwriter

totally agree with this, I think he's a very, very clever and witty writer

don't mind The Beautiful South musically and have seen them live on a few occasions but can't get too excited but like Jefe said there are some real gems.

my brother's old flatmate joined the BS a few years ago as their percussionist and reported that the band liked to party hard

I love them. Great songs :)

I'm your No.1 fan, bell bottomed tear and love speak up are my favourites.

love them. and the housemartins. as others have said, it's the way heaton dresses his realism in a pretty tune. shame it goes right over the heads of some people.

Years late but I'm bumping this because I've recently been re-listening to my Beautiful South albums after years of neglect, and they're really absolutely fucking great, especially the first two. So many fantastic songs, so many harsh lyrics hidden inside such sweet music .. whoever said they've (well, had) no edge hasn't really listened to the words. That's where the edge is, and it's sharp as fuck.

That's very Heaton-esque, it'd make a great Best Of title if they hadn't already done one. Maybe they could use it for an anniversary box set one day...
He said it originally, as with the second part about musical similarity.
