The Beat That My Heart Skipped (De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté)

One on one? You're crazy.
saw this today, unusually it's a french remake of an american film, a 1978 film called "fingers" which i haven't seen, starred harvey keitel as a gangster/pianist

the french version has Romain Duris playing a tom, a property heavy, kicking people out of their squats so that the property can be sold, by introducing rats into the building, or beating them up,. he is not a nice guy, he is an anti-hero, but he also loves playing the piano, which he gets from his dead mother, a chance meeting with her agent, prompts him to take it up again, with tuition from a non-french speaking chinese woman

his dad is a rubbish gangster who keeps being ripped off ,so Tom gets dragged into his life collecting money from debtors, he provides alibis for a mate who is shagging away from home, drinks a lot, smokes a lot, occasional drug use, it's a really quick movie, something going on all the time, and tom is in the middle of everything

loved it, romain duris is fantastic, a very very sexy bad boy...

I've come across a lot of praise for this film recently and I will endeavour to go see it ASAP.

this film halted the dramatic decline in my faith in contemporary french cinema, definitely a good one to see

if yu like la Haine try getting hold of Mathieu Kassowitz's other stuff, "Assassin" is mindblowing and "Les Rivieres de pourpres" a great french thriller

there's a Renoir season comin' up in January I think at the NFT

my favourite French film is "Bande a Part" by Godard, thinkin' about it I also really like "au revoir les enfants"

love Eric Rhomer's films too, especially "A Summer's Tale" and "Les Rendez vous de Paris"

But didn't you see L'homme du Train" a couple of years ago?? Johnny Halliday went up about 600 percent in my estimation after that.

I thought The Beat etc.. was wonderful..

I just thought it was a bit boring. Not many clever funny bits, not emotionally involving, not amazing to look at.
My friend who I saw it with thought it was the most fantastic thing ever though, and he's more cultured than me.

l'homme du train was a great film... :)

Funnily enough I caught this film at blockbuster's (who are not renowned for independent films) and thought it was wonderful. I didn't realise it was a remake of an American film. The one problem I have with this film is that is it indicative of french society in any way shape or form? I saw 'Hidden' a few months ago and was struck by the thought that there is no humility in the characters depicted.
I'm not basing my opinion on just these two films, I was just curious to know.
Otherwise a good film and please watch it.

I really like this film :) I have it on divx if anyone wants a copy, though it doesn't have subtitles (I think there might be a way to get them on though....)
