The Ashes Tour 06/07

Yeah, I was going a bit far. You couldn't have Lara or Tendulkar say lower than 4, that would be scandalous...

Perfect credentials then. Or should that be prefect.

Not convinced by Key, eats as many pies as Inzi but not got the talent, Shah I like but from the rumour mill Fletch doesn't.

Aye. Although both Jones and Read are pretty moribund with the bat at the highest level, the amount of chances Jones has got comparatively is a disgrace.

I'm with Boycs, so long and thanks for all the fish. After the WC the timing should finally be right for Woolmer to step in.

Final warm up game South Australia 60-4, Hoggard with three wickets, Jimmeh with t'other. Harmison withdrawn as a precaution after he woke up with side stiffness, good news is that Monty plays which indicates sanity has prevailed and he'll get the nod over Gilo come the 'Gabba.

Unless of course Giles is being rested or summat.

If our players peform to their best, like in the last series, then we shall win, or at the very least keep the little urn.

Simon jones was a key player last time for sure, but we now have monty, and cook in the team. I expect both to have outstanding series. I also think strauss will have an even better series than last year's.

But at the end of the day it's up to our bowlers who did such an excellent job at getting 20 wickets.

And just to add, i am off to see the final test at sydney on the saturday...

We're going to get spanked, fela. No question about it.

Did you say that before the last ashes series mate?!

If i recall correctly over footy matters by saying that you feel we might have a chance?

The thing is our players are good enough.

The second thing is that we have the psychological edge, which we'd not had for so long.

The third thing is that yes, it is a scenario that could happen where they run riot over us. As an england fan of any sport we're well used to that sort of thing.

But my feeling is that it will actully end up 2-2. Rain will fuck up one of the tests, probably sydney.

I dunno. English sportsmen seem to suffer this thing of, even when they do win something major, only holding on to it for a short time. Look at the rugby team. OK, that is partly because so many retired. I just can't see the Aussies giving up the ashes a second time. They will be desperate to get it back. Even though they thrash us most times, they still are desperate to thrash us again the next.

That's a good enough reason as to why we might lose, but not why we might get spanked!

Anyway, if there's one thing more arrogant than a man u fan, and i mean way more arrogant (yes that is possible) it's the aussies in cricket when they play us. For that reason only, if justice and fairness are to play a part then they're going to not only not going to draw, they're going to get beat.

We have men with strong enough internal combustions and steely resolve to help us leave the aussie men writhing around in sheer agony by late december early january time.

The last ashes win was my favourite sporting moment, and should we prevail this time, then it will even outdo that. Beating them on their own patch.

Just like in the rugby.

I salivate at the prospect, and i'm gonna be down there for the final test...

Point taken about englishmen's inablity to retain winning momemtum, but half our side were born elsewhere...!

On paper, Aussies should stroll it. Just like last time, except McGrath, Warne, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist and Martin are all 18 months older, and all but two of them were beginning to look past it last time round. Gilchrist will drop catches, Hayden is vulnerable to swing, Martin has concentration issues. McGrath won't last the course. Warne can't be expected to carry them this time.

The team with the better bowlers nearly always wins. Just as the form of England's nominally fourth seamer was crucial last time, how Anderson/Mahmood performs this time will be important. A genuine quicky quartet, as WI used to show, means that there is no let up at all for batters whatever the stage of the innings. I still don't see anything too scary from Oz once you get past McG and Warne. They've been the reason Australia have dominated for a decade. Look at India - brilliant batsmen alone can only draw a test; you need brilliant bowlers to win consistently.

I've read and thought about this series so much that I am now completely unable to form a coherent opinion about it. My last solid belief was that Monty must play over Giles, but I've just read a convincing argument that spin will play little to no part in the series and Giles' batting and fielding would be more valuable. I'm hopelessly adrift in a sea of claims and counterclaims I can't evaluate objectively.

I also think McGrath is looking a little ropey.

We have the batting, no doubt. If we had a fully fit bowling attack a la 2005 I would be very confident. As it is really up in the air but it's very exciting looking forward to it. If Flintoff, Hoggard, Harmison and Anderson all show up to the party then we should win. If Monty takes a few wickets as well then happy days.

Congratulations, you have achieved cricket enlightenment/nirvana.

Have I mentioned yet that I love Hoggy? Because I do. I love his daft walk and his shaggy hair and enthusiasm. Hoggy's great.

McGrath is potentially a weak link. I hope our batsmen attack him. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I am glad that Panesar looks set to play. It is a close choice between him and Giles but he is both a talisman and potential match-winner.

Trescothick going home is probably a good thing - Cook is a stronger opening batsman even given his age.

I think our challenge will depend on our fast bowlers, particularly Harmison and Flintoff. If they crack into gear - we have a great chance of retaining the Ashes.

I can't wait

I hope you're right mate, and considering all the shit mcgrath's given us down the years it would be rather magical to see him take on one too many ashes series against us. If he is just over the hill then i think flintoff has the cricketing brain to have noticed and will have his players go in for the kill. And that would be total theatre.

You're right, it's down to the bowlers which is how we won last time.

One other thing: i think in a series like this with the full context behind it flintoff is the sort of man to get our players exceeding expectations and playing out of their skins. He might also show em the ryder cup footage to get them prepared...

all bullshit aside

Taking off my Aussie hat and being a cricket tragic i would question why England couldn't do it.The last Ashes side to play here was not a patch on the one you have now.Adding to that you have a side that holds The Ashes and our blokes have to get them back so where is the pressure??On us for sure.Even if McGrath breaks down,Mitchell or Stewy Clarke or Shaun Tate are all quick but your bowlers made the difference last time. The pitches here are all like main roads, flat as a squashed cow turd,no shit(pardon the pun).
For mine i would say we will take maybe 4 quicks and Warnie and try to unsettle your top order straight up.I reckon Cook is up to it and will make his name here this season.Trescothick leaving takes the pressure off Cook and Strauss,to play shots, get confident knowing if they get done they will get another game without somebody waiting in the wings to take their place. It all adds to the pressure on batsmen.
I think that it will be a good series and would love to see a 3-2 result(our way of course) but it will not be a doddle.England have a good enough side to retain The Ashes but i am sure Aussie spirit will shine and we will get them back.
