The 'anyone else writing a dissertation' thread?

how the fuck did you get funding for so many degrees?

I didn't.

From 1998 on, I worked my arse off at either pizza delivery or Tesco's Home Delivery to cover rent, university fees, etc :)

e2a: I might be mistaken on this. I honestly can't remember. I was certainly paying fees from 2002 on; can't remember whether I had to cover them in '98 / '99 or not... Those two were - also - switches of course within one university. I never lasted more than three or four weeks p/a after year one :D

e2a: the most vexsome being 2003. In which fees were fully refundable for an entire year if a student spent less than eight weeks on a course; I spent 10 weeks before dropping out, and was thus liable for 1,120 quid - a full year's fees :D

e2e2a: though in 2006 my certificate was - originally - paid for by work (though I had to repay fees as I left within a year); and in 2007 my university and course fees were met by a scholarship :) I'm not allowed to work this year... My university expressly forbids it.

Not writing, but I am supervising 2 undergraduate dissertations which are due in on Friday.
It's almost as tiring as writing the damn things.
Still. They're getting better with every draft and it's pretty-much over now.
Remember to use your supervisor as much as possible. They will hate you but it's what they're there for :D

 but also

i was kinda referring to LEA funding rather than grants, student loans etc, it was my understanding that the fees that uk students pay only cover a portion of the total cost, they may just refuse to pay their share after X years.

anyway, after all that you seem to be doing very well, so it's just as well :D

You're allowed to read drafts of undergraduate dissertations? That was banned on my degree, tutors were only allowed to comment on plans, they hardly had to do anything until marking time.

dissertation due: 9th May
words: 0

more to the point why did you start so many degrees?

Thank god I'm not the only one.

I know someone (and so does dilli) who has to hand in their diss on the 30th and has written 500 words so far. He also has an essay that day, and 2 exams in the pre- and pro-ceeding days.

lol.

Our supervisors are allowed to read 4000 words of 12000, not a word more, not a word less. Must vary depending on uni regulations.

holy fucking dear good gods  *faints* my report is due in ASAP and not June

FUCK FUCK FUCKITY FUCK

The regs state that the supervisor is allowed to read only one complete draft.
I've only seen one complete draft, well, I am looking at them now. The rest has been in parts. And my boss has deemed that technically he is the supervisor so I could look at as many as I like. :hmm:
Still, they've put in fuckloads of work and I want to support them to the best of my abilities, because they deserve it.

Look what I found:

I remember writing my dissertation, I survived on large cups of tea and double deckers.

I always left my coursework so late that it would start off clear and with definition, lucid, grammatically correct, but then as I ran out of time it descended into complete anarchy...

Ah, the good old days!

NB: purely by copying in the bits of assignments that I'd trimmed out to meet word count limits, I've 'written' 3,500 words today :D

e2a: at the same time, by discovering a new abstract service I've printed off approx. 500 new pages of articles and abstracts to wade through :(

I hate citations :(
Do you have good citation/bibliographic software like Endnote? It makes a huge difference, especially if you enter your sources as you go.

If you don't want to fork over good money, the Zotero plugin for Firefox does similar work, and is free. It was developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, mainly with historians in mind, but it works with all sorts of sources. It will integrate with Word as well, for when you're writing, although it's not quite as sophisticated as Endnote.

On my MA, at one point I was sat in a hall and realised that I was supposed to give a presentation that day - worth roughly 25% of my marks.

I asked the others what the topic was, then I sat back, asked questions and pretended to note the answers down, while actually sketching out my presentation.

This was the same for pretty much everything on my MA. I garnered a distinction. *polishes halo*

On my PGCE I wrote 11,000 well-researched and cited words, with real-life examples, in 6 hours, in total (4 different essays).

I R Teh Queen of post-grad procastinators. Or I might be, were it not for having a kid and stopping the post-grad studies and so on.

Beyond unnecessary boasting, I do have point: don't give up. Just keep going. No matter what point you're at, write what you can - it's better than having nothing to hand in. You will sometimes be surprised how good it can be.

Nicely :D

Our marking scheme: pass / fail.

There is an award for the person with the top marks in the year, and - occasionally - they'll dole out a second place. Other than that it's just pass / fail. So, like, maybe two but usually one person'll get the equivalent of a 'distinction' :D

Which does - on occasions - leave me wondering why I bother working my backsnide off quite so much :D

Oh. Studentship funding aside, obv :)

I have just finished my first essay...but not the reference list or biblio yet so I don't have that complete satisfaction feeling yet! I'm over by 50 words and can't find other ways to trim so I was going to just leave it but that would make me worry so I'm going to take out a section and put as an appendix!

I'm off work tomorrow and just need to decide if I should get drunk tonight!

Good luck everyone with your work. I can't imagine what it's like handing in 10,000 words plus as most I have ever done is 3000.

Why bother? I've never found bibliographies any effort, and writing 'em gives a satisfying feeling of completion :)

Moonsi - just think of it as six 3,000 word essays, stuck together :)

I agree, re: the bibliographies. I have never had any trouble with them at all.

And that is how I consider any longer piece of work. Even 3000 word essays I break down into 500 word-ish chunks, and then it doesn't seem like anything at all.

I like doing Bibliographies. :o Piece a piss and they make me feel clever seeing the list of books I'm making out to have read. ;)

Mine's gotta be in for next week and I've pretty much done it. It's a bit shit but I'm so sick of it (and the whole subject) I don't really care as long as it passes. :)

2 days, 5 interviews transcribed, 42,500 words typed...

7 more interviews to go!

e2a: and most of the remaining ones are 30mins tops! With the exception of one bastad mammoth 1hr 20 one ....
