The annual single malt whiskey thread

Just had another glass of Laphroaig Quarter Cask, don't like it at all.
Tastes like Witch-Hazel or detergent, it's vile.
I'm with you, I don't like those sorts of whisky and suspect MsT's Jura would have a similar effect on me. I haven't really found anything I like more than Macallan yet.

The Belvenie was lovely - tasted vaguely of Pedro Ximinez sherry.

I had a 14 year old Oban last night which was also delicious - it was all heathery and honey-y - but I paid hotel prices for it which wasn't so great.

I only buy one bottle of malt whisky a year, as a Christmas present to myself. Seems an awfully long time away.

Seeing as it's now December, I am now the proud owner of a bottle of this:

Quite a departure from the Laphroaig I got last year.

I got given this absolute beast of a whisky today:

I've just sampled it and it's great but a real mouthful too. A sort of macho whisky.

57%? Pretty strong stuff... How does it taste?

My first reaction is that it tastes powerful. I'm not used to stuff that is verging around cask strength.

But after that its main difference from your standard Talisker seems to be the intensity. There's still the same spiciness and slightly sweet warmth as per normal but those particular flavours are both dominant and exaggerated, perhaps to the cost of the traditional smoky, peaty overtone.

Best mixed with a drop of teachers or some other blend, used to drink it neat (and laproiag etc) but while I still love the taste, it is a bit throat wrenching these days;)
