The annual single malt whiskey thread

Herbsman.

Nah Lotion, Pet, Nor Powder.
The weather has become cold as fuck lately so I think it is the perfect time to start drinking whiskey. There seems to be a single malt thread every year so I am starting it early...

I had just eaten a reasonably large and wonderfully pleasant curry after which I embarked upon an epic mission in the cold to a pub with a moose's head on the wall, and it was there what I seen it, the bottle of Balvenie.

SO I askde for a single, and savoured it for the best part of the hour while chatting bollocks about sandwhich politics (see mr steev's sandwhich thread), charlatan doctors (the one what sniffs poo) and various other things what I cannot no longer remember.

It was very very sweet comparde to what I am used to in a whisky (I have not tride Balvenie before), there was no detectable peatiness or saltiness or seaweediness, simply honey sweetness, a bit of subdued floral aroma and a slight spiceyness to the flavour.

Unfortunately the curry had caused my stomach to take a turn for the worse and it was then that I was forced to phone for a taxi and embark upon the journey home.

I cant believe I spent over 100 squid on whiskey in one month last year despite being absolutely fucking skint and in debt and having much more important things to do with my money...

Anyway, so, which whiskeys do you wish to taste this year, which are your current favourites, etc.?

Also see question 2

Current Favourites are as above the Balvenie (all three types) and the Bushmills single malt.

I am planning a bottle of Talisker.

Had a snifter of the 10 year old Balvenie the other day. It was lovely stuff.

i bought a lagavulin the other day... it was lush...

I love Bunnahabhain.... so I'll probably buy one of those...

but, perhaps I should be tasting some others...

Herbsman - I sent you a PM - but I think i might have sent it to the wrong person - did you get it?

No you probably sent it to "Herbsman" you need to send it to "Herbsman." <--- note the full stop!

cheese with whiskey?!

Ardbeg (Islay) has just won 'best whisky on the planet' or somesuch.

Not sure I'd want complexity from an island malt. Too me, it's more about the flickering of tv's in distant croft windows as the cocaine smuggler slips out of harbour....

Laphroaig is about £12.00 in the supermarket.

I do not go to the supermarket.

What what what?

Which one?

I hate the stuff, but it's Mr S's favourite and I like to get in a bottle every christmas, like a good wife :D But really skint this year, where can you get it that cheap?

10 year old. I prefer it, more 'eeeurgh-bastsid' to it.

Alas, the supermarket is Champion, on the bypass of the small French town where I marinate.

Oh :(

Not Tescos in Norwich then :(

When last in Tessas, (3 years ago) it was definitely the cheapest for leapfrog.

What it is now, no idea. They used to do a generic Islay malt, not Leapfrog, too distinctive, but you could always get an empty from the pub and refill it with generic. A drop of iodine and a bit of seaweed juice would fool most if they were well watered first:D

My beau's family are whisky exporters or in a similar magical trade :D

I must now learn enough to make me not look stupid at new years innit ;)

They've stopped doing the generic now, but the 46% Ardbeg is down to £21. So that's okay.

Anyway, Bunnahabain was the correct answer all along.

I wish I could like whisky :( It's one of those things, like hearing people speaking in an exotic foreign tongue, where I just know that a world of enchantment and adventure awaits just beyond the border of understanding, if I can only get across...but I never will.

Still, the boyfriend loves it and so I shall be getting him a fine single malt this Christmas as a vicarious method of enjoyment  I seem to remember that he's particularly fond of Balvennie, although he does have a taste for the really medicinal shit as well.

It may seem odd, but a quite good cheap whiskey is ADSA's own brand single malt highland. I'm not sure what made me try it, but it's pretty decent whiskey when you're on a budget.

I'm sure it tastes fine, but the fact that it's got an ASDA label on it would really put me off enjoying it :(

My most adventurous forays into the world of single malts seem to be Glenlivets and Glenmorangies. I'll have to try some of this Balvenie stuff.

the whisky shop was shut  which was a shame - they've got some gems in there... but p'raps for the best - I could have gotten carried away!

Instead I came home with a bottle of Balvenie Doublewood 12 yr old. Never tried it so hoping for good things
