The *almost* World Cup thread! (Confederations Cup)

The new zeland defence is woeful. Im a better defender then all of em!

None of the defenders would be pros in this country.

I really really like how spain play though, full backs pushing on, everybody playing two touch football and with a nice bit of variety to their play.

I really can't wait to see thm vs brazil it cold be something quite special.

They'd normally have Blackburn's Ryan Nelsen. Doubt he'd make much difference though to be fair.

Iraq v NZ will be a classic I reckon(!)

Fabregas today saying that England were the one team Spain feared next year. Kidology, perhaps?

He knows who funds his wages more like.

I guess, if it all goes as planned, the group excitement should come from second place in Group A, SA, NZ or Iraq? I may be wrong but it'll probably be Italy and Brazil in Group B, unless Egypt or the USA spring a major surprise.

Very sad about the empty at the second game. South Africa should just say fuck it and let them in free, but then I'm an idealist.

Re: Group A. My gut tells me South Africa but it seems they're going downhill a it, not qualifying for the African Nations and stuff. Iraq were the surprise winners of the Asian Cup so could continue their good form. So it could be close. Gonna go down to goal difference I reckon. Put as many as possible past NZ and defend-defend-defend vs Spain.

Group B will deffo be Italy and Brazil, surely?

I'm guessing top in Group A plays 2nd in Group B in the semis so it will just be a flat out battle for 1st place.

Thing is though, we've still got a year to go, and Spain have been remarkably rapid in their rise. There's also the not-in-Europe factor. Holland might get my money at the moment if I were a betting man (14/1).

o wouldnt be too shocked if usa managed to edge out the old men of italy to be honest.

They have some decent players and a bit of pace about them aren't total shit at back. A bit of hetoics from friedel and i reckoon they are in with a shout.

im going 1-0 to USA or maybe 2-1 usa. I have a feeling about this game.

and however many the hell brazil feel like scoring nil.

I dunno, I doubt if Egypt are anywhere near as crap as NZ. I imagine them to be like a mid table Prem side. I think it will be tight but Brazil will edge it.

people always expect Brazil to turn out this fantasy football, but they don't - remember the last world cup!

I'd agree with that - very hard-working and well organised, constantly underestimated when the African cup of nations comes around.

The North African sides are often good to watch. Morocco played some good stuff at France 98, IIRC Norway got a very jammy 2-2 draw with them when Morocco really deserved to win, had they won they'd have made the next round.

They tend to play in quite a British style actually. Indeed, I would argue that Zaki is the last great english centre forward...

Mulligan, the right back, is. Had a decent enough career up to Championship level. Too slow to ever play at the top level but by no means useless. Lochhead at left back wasn't completely awful either, but those two centre backs really weren't up to dealing with anything much. So 50/50. Two pros, two amateurs.

Shane Smeltz was disappointing, on his day he can play a bit, but he didn't get any service and wasn't able to get himself in the game.

Spain were superb. Undoubtedly the best team in the world at the moment.

Egypt are a class act and if Italy don't take them seriously I can see it being them and Brazil going through. Can't see the USA having the creativity to open up any of the three defences they'll be facing. At least not on what I've seen over the last few years from them.

Brazil are erratic at the moment, but should be a safe enough bet to beat the USA and Egypt. In which case the Egypt Italy game is the crucial one.

1-1! Zidan, just like his sound-a-like. Good header.

Damn, can't watch the rest of the game, gotta go out :( looks like it could be a decent match...
