In the light of some of the above postings, I think it is worth noting that in may traditional societies a guest - often foreign and uninvited - is sacred, even if he turns out to have killed one of your own family. Attitudes to foreigners are complex, surely, and dependent on role and situation?

Again, Himmler, in what seems to me a very 'modern' way, was deeply troubled by the danger that his boys might be corrupted by the filthy work they had to do. I don't know much about Genghiz, but I doubt he lost sleep over such problems.

I firmly believe that the majority of people will always shoot to miss and that will kill only when frightened of 'leaders'. There are always enough damaged persons to be torturers and murderers, however, particularly under capitalism.
