You can walk there, if you dare, on the most dangerous footpath in England. It goes along the coast, offshore and is tide dependant.

Another lost village is Tyneham in Purbeck, Dorset. I visited earlier and enjoyed it far more than Imber.
You can visit Tyneham year round, provide there is no firing. You can wander in and out of the buildings, there is history with them. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous and you can easily visit the totally undeveloped beach of Worbarrow or go further to Lulworth.

oooh! I've been to the checkpoint, and been turned away, but knew nothing of either the bus or, more interesting, the heritage center open days. It's going on the todo list, to join the walk on the Broomway which we've failed dismally year after year to book :(

Yes , I mentioned this 13 years ago on this thread 😀

Read a story today about what was possibly the last burial at the village church - some chap who'd lived there. MoD gave permission for the burial to take place.

What may be the last funeral in Imber of a former resident will be taking place in January

I've been to the abandoned village of Oradour sur Glane.
Virtually the whole village was rounded up and killed by the 'Das Reich' Panzer regiment in July 1944.
The village was left untouched and not repopulated after the war and serves as a memorial to those who died.

It's touching that the French have chosen to memorialise what was just one example of the unspeakable brutality that Germany meted out as their forces began to collapse.

But I can't help but think that such a village here would have ended up being flattened and the land sold off for a housing estate. Places like Imber only stay untouched because it suits the state to keep it that way.

Coincidentally they just announced a preservation plan - doubtless modern ruins are more fragile than ancient ones...

In Oradour-sur-Glane, relief after the signing of a management plan to preserve the village

To ensure that the massacre is never forgotten, the State has committed itself via an agreement to restore and maintain the ruins of Oradour-sur-Glane to the tune of 19 million euros over 15 years. A relief for those who keep the memory of the martyred village alive.
