the 2005/06 essay advice thread

More EU stuff PM 'Assess the implications of the most recent (2004) enlargement and the controversies surrounding the proposals for an EU constitutions for the relative utility of traditional theories of European integration'

Should I talk about Neofunctionalism v.s. intergovernmentalism/liberal-intergovernmentalism and say that although the enlargement has the appearance of neofunctional theory the rejection of the constitutions highlights the fact that the nation states have a strong role in the EU?

Books for Dissertation on the Constitution.

Pickman's model said:
Timothy Patrick McCarthy & John McMillian (eds), The Radical Reader: A Documentary History of the American Radical Tradition (New York: The New Press, 2003)

Nicholas N Kittrie & Eldon D Wedlock, Jr (eds), The Tree of Liberty: A Legal, Historical, Social, and Psychological Inquiry into Rebellions and Political Crimes, Their Causes, Suppression, and Punishment in the United States (Rev. Ed.) (Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998)

Talking about the constitution is interesting. What you write really depends on the direction in which you intend to move. I wrote my dissertion on Oppression and how to use alternative methods to heal from its effects. (Not a very cheerful subject, but the end was positive.) I used the U.S. and its culture as a central theme. A book called A Return to Being Human Religously came out of it. It is a radical book, but if you want to talk about they systemic issues happening at the time, it is good to look at it from that angle. You can get it at Amazon.com.

The U.S. Constitution is very interesting. I think you should look at some books like: The Peoples History and also books like Democracy for the Few. You can probably find some of the excerpts and so on from them if you run them through the search engines. :o

"what are the advantages and disadvantages of different electoral systems? Give examples from different countries."

I'd just like a few suggestions of simple but different electoral systems in place in forgein countries as Im not too sure of where to start with that.

I've already got germany and britain along with some proportional representation systems that I dont have real life examples for.

Any non-democratic election systems that I could cover without major drama?

there are several sorts of electoral system.

1) first past the post. most votes wins a seat - no extra points for having more votes nationwide if you come second in every constituency.

2) german prop. rep.
party has to get 5% of the vote to get into parliament.

3) prop. rep. six counties/northern ireland
single transferable vote: http://accuratedemocracy.com/d_stv.htm

4) elections in the ussr
from the 1977 ussr constitution

i'm very pleased to hear that you did so well! :)

an extension of English for Pickmans to have a crack at here.

edited for reasons far too boring to go into here, damn you google!

Any thoughts???

i think you should look at bathes and foucault, their bits about "the death of the author" (b, iirc) and "what is an author" (f, iirc). one's in the foucault reader and the other is in some barthes book i can't immediately recall.

cheers - will have a scout and no doubt prop up what I have cobbled together with your suggestions - hopefully from the Waterstones sales!!

you'll be able to find them easily in yr college library, or any reputable local authority library. westminster would be a good bet.

yeah, might try manchester central, it's getting there that's the issue so buying them from waterstones is usually quicker for me sadly, uni library is closed until 9th Jan and it's due in midday on 10th. Might give some Uni mates a ring, see if they have copies of these or similar from their days in English

cheers for the pointer picks

How's your Shakespeare Pickman's? I have an essay entitled:

"The Tempest has been described as 'a play imbricated within the discourse of colonialism'. Discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of post-colonial readings of the play"

Now I have a fair idea of the various colonial readings of the Tempest (although thoughts on these would be welcome), however I'm not quite sure which angle to tackle advantages and disadvantages from. Cheers! :)
