the 08/09 non league football thread

Hello folks. Thought I'd make my first u75 post. Been to two non-league matches this season:- Dulwich vs Charlton and Sutton vs Ramsgate. Was impressed with Dulwich and impressed with both sides at Sutton. Had a season ticket at Dog Kennel Hill last season but actually prefer their lodgers Fisher. Does anyone know what happened to their proposed new stadium in Southwark Park? In case I sound luke warm to life outside the league, I'm actually a die-hard Millwall [!] fan but am sick of £20 entrance fees for indifferent, overhyped coca-cola nonsense. Cheers, Grazza.

P.S. I can warm you in advance, I'm a slow poster.

6 months, one post, see you sometime next year:D

welcome grazza

You going to Twerton next week Andy?

Oh yes, my first away of the season, should be a big one and have an all day pass. On the 10:00 out of Paddington and getting one of the last trains back to London. Looking forward to visiting Twerton, a proper football ground and the Bath pubs for some decent real ales and ciders. Pub recommendations would be appreciated. I think T&P could be making the journey. If he hasn't picked up a ban for being a hoolie at Newport that is..

Loads of decent pubs in Bath CC, though I can't remember which ones are which. Bath's not my strong point. Twerton pubs are pretty bog standard, though when we left in 1996 I hadn't yet graduated to pre and post match boozing so I'm a bit ignorant there as well.

If I decide against going to Elland Road I may well go to Twerton. At least one mate of mine is planning on it.

anyone ever go to leyton fc? just down the road from where i live, might check them out this season, i've been meaning to for years  at self
Yep, I've been there - as an away fan. Actually, I did the official match report last time!

It's . . . um . . . probably not really what you're looking for. The club is financially supported by the guy who owns the night club on the road there. Last time I looked the average gate was 92 - though the people around the bar were friendly and the burger and chips at the tea bar very decent. The seating was okay but rickety.

Oh, and they got relegated last season :(

mmm, thanks for the report, i might still go though, i can walk there in about 20 minutes, or get a bus that takes about 5, i'll tell you how it went, if i do get down there.

Can I just take this moment to be extremely smug as I look at the Conference South table and the mighty Dons top of the table with five wins out of five..

:D

you lot seem to adapt pretty well to each new league you go into - do you change the personnel much with each promotion or is it easier than that?

We have brought in about six new first teamers and have strengthened the spine of the team, centre defence and midfield. The quality of football is much better in the Conference south, we play on the ground with an attacking flair. The Ryman league football philosophy was/is kick it hard, the ball if you have, if you do not have the ball the opponent who does. The club, both on and off the pitch has improved immeasurably. To think that one year ago we had just lost one nil at East Thurrock and were in teh bottom third of the Ryman Premier and now we a top of the Conference South.

Fisher - not a great start, but am sure it will be alright in the end.

Might go to the double header v AFC Wimbledon over Christmas.

4 games, 4 wins. Yesterday was a 5-1 thumping of Carshalton at Carshalton (18 miles round trip on yer push bike, no less). They've got a lovely standing terrace there, best in the league by far.

It won't last of course - and, as always, it's all about avoiding relegation until the 40 odd points are in the bag . . .

East Thurrock :D What a place that is!

Good start by your lot. At least for now it seems Mr Brown has got things properly back on track - the club's wage bill has to top £600,000 this year, doesn't it?

balders will be even more pissed off after this afternoon's one nil win at Basingstoke, four wins in four and top of the table. :D

Yep have to say i think your going up again.
But in some ways i will be glad to see you promoted. I guess with your crowds you deserve a conference team.

Heard that Fisher are planning a 10,000 seat stadium in Southwark Park. Sounds barking.....Whats happened to their old ground?
All sounds dodgy.....I wonder how long Horsham will groundshare at Worthing....The Crazy world of non league football.

We can only hope, but I think it will be playoffs again for us and another season in the Conference South. Team Bath are going well and Chelmsford have a lot of funding behind them, Havant and Waterloovile have still to dip into their TV money from last seasons cup run. Fisher's old ground in Rotherhithe was supposed to be developed but machinations of local politics have resulted in a stalemate and an undeveloped ground. Fisher have lost a number of players to professional football and the lack of crowds and loss of the Asif's heroin import business has meant that they are having cash flow problems.

Sure the Arifs will be glad to pay you a personal visit to put you straight on the fisher situation Andy....
Team bath....god help us....
Still think you should do it in the end....Just hoping you will sign some dodgy striker without international clearance from port talbot or something and get put put back in the rymans...

We've signed up for two years but the second year is conditional (in terms of Isthmian Legaue clearance) on planning being granted or appealed (it wasn't granted).

Of course, now Creepy Crawley have been saved from the dreadful gangsta bro's from Brighton, it's possible we could move a little closer to home in due course - especially if the season continues like this and Con South beckons*

But generally, we're up shit creek without a hope of our own ground, but at least with cash and assets.

* yep, not likely . . .

Criminals and non-league football..

If you think about it a perfect way to wash dodgy proceeds from crime. Much of the money following through the non-league game is cash. Players at some clubs get their bonuses in cash. Gate and bar income is all cash based. So if you put your "dirty" money through non-league football, you may only get between 20%-30% back, but that cash is clean.

I don't know how easy it is to demonstrate a profit in non-league. I always thought it was more about 'living the dream' - a football club being the new bling. You can pay in cash though, so maybe - I'm not an accountant so . . .

When I next go back to my parents' place I might try and get to a Basingstoke game. I feel a bit guilty that I've never been to see my hometown club play (although I moved out of Basingstoke itself when I was 3).

For someone who doesn't even claim to be a Franchise FC fan, you have a bizarre obsession with AFCW.

Is this some kind of trolling exercise for you? Or are you a Milton Keynes councillor or something?

Sad thing is that the FA does so little to stop the way the non league game is abused.
On the Franchise issue they should never have allowed Raj Kholsa to sell Kingstonians ground.
When people like him can make such a profit out of non league football, clubs will always be at risk.

You have to wonder how Whoresham ever got permission to move to worthing. The non league scene is full of dodgy businessmen.....

Tony Greenwood of Fleetwood Town voted non league manager of the year today.

Fleetwood have a very impressive squad and their ground is looking excellent. Their crowds are hovering around the 4 figure mark and rising. They also have made a couple of really outstanding signings, the most noteworthy of which was John Hills this summer - Hills had been in the Championship with Gillingham, Sheff Wednesday and Blackpool for a good number of years and was widely expected to drop only to league 1 when leaving Bloomfield this summer - for him to pitch up in the conference north was a major surprise.

I really hope they can continue in this vein (they want league football in the long run) and don't go bust like two previous incarnations of the club though I believe if Accrington can support a club then Fleetwood can - it's a more traditional football type area than Blackpool to be honest a real working class town built on a tough industry, it's also got the huge catchment area that the pool take from just down the road and they are picking off fans pissed off at the price rises and membership schemes going on at Bloomers which make it very difficult to get in if you aren't a season ticket holder.

Having lived in Fleetwood for quite a long time, it's a place that needs something to shout about. It's a wonderful place but it's not got a lot going for it in some ways and I really think the club can be a focal point for its identity which is so very different from Blackpool yet it's all to often seen as just a suburb of its bigger neighbour which it very much isn't.

I'm also quite interested in the reborn Leigh RMI (Leigh genesis) for similar reasons (Leigh is NOT Wigan - I should know, I was born there!) but to be honest am much more sceptical about them - Leigh is a rugby town and always has been and the new stadium there hopefully will be a springboard for another real superleague push for Leigh - it may well do something for the club but with Wigan doing so well (and there normally being plenty of room at the JJB for floating fans) I'm not optimistic.

I like this thread by the way. :)

tbf, Leigh 'Genesis' should change their name back to Horwich RMI and move back to, er, Horwich

Well that's the basis for my skepticism - tbf tho, have you ever been to Horwich? I'm not sure it's a place you'd move back to that willingly :D

football teams are not angsty teenagers waiting to escape the dump they grew up in

but you know this :)

No Twerton for me, I'm off to Elland Road to be menaced by stroppy Yorkshiremen

Maybe you'd consider it though if you lived in Leigh.

My most local non-league team hasn't started too brightly - Woking have 1 point from 6 games.
