That Petrol Emotion

I waitressed a table at Butlin's for somebody in TPE back in 1991. He gave me one of their tapes, I think he was trying to chat me up to get me to bring him extra portions (fnar).:D

Ace thread.

I really liked them too. 'Swamp' was my favourite song of theirs. "YEAH SHE SAID WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DIM !!!" :D

OK missfran, I know we're all bugging him to death but can you please ask him if he remembers an ace gig they did at Glastonbury on the main stage? It would've been about 1986 I think. The Cure were on after iirc.

A very young NVP enjoyed it a lot, tell him. My first Glastonbury. I finished me O levels that morning, left school and was off me tits in the Green Field that evening. :D

yeah, with our help you can go well stalker-y on him and he won't want to look you in the eye anymore :D

FlightOfTheConchords_02x06_3.BMP

he should write a song about it :)

He says he remembers playing Glastonbury but doesn't remember The Cure and either you're hallucinating or his memory is shot. He says he remembers drinking from Shane McGowan's wine bottle at the side of the stage when Shane reeled towards him and handed him the bottle. :D

Just let the poor man read the thread! He'll be more worried about a persistent "friend" enquiring after old gigs than finding out he is the new pet slightly obscure 80s musician of a music forum on 'tinternet.

No, he'd have to register to read the thread, and then he'll see I'm talking about him, it would be weird. Plus, he's working!

I was there too! the only Glastonbury I ever went to, I listened to the Cure from my tent - stoned and with a lady (who sadly had her eyes on someone else, still we got pleasantly stoned) so would have listened to TPE from the tent as well - tell him he sounds great from a tent

No! There's people saying his later stuff was weak and one of their gigs was shit. I'm not going to call him over to read that!

Okay, I gave in! He read the first half of the first page said "I'll read the rest when I need a boost. Tell them I'm now sitting here audio describing Transworld Sport, how's that for glamorous?" :D

Cool. I liked V2 very much, but their later work (tell him) was a bit too polished.

Are they reissuing Manic Pop Thrill?

He says "Thanks. Too polished! You can never be too polished!"

I used to like them, Manic Pop Thrill and Babble were both great albums. I thought they went downhill a lot after that though.
They were always excellent live but I saw them after they had been dumped by Virgin and they didn't seem interested and it was a pretty shit gig.

He says "You're wrong  :D "

My brother and I were big fans and we saw them many times back in the day, there was one gig in the New Inn in Dublin which was particularly memorable. They should have been bigger but people wanted the bloody smiths instead or something.

He says he remembers that and it was a great gig. They were going to have the night off but someone said they'd put him on but they wouldn't pay him and they went on anyway and it was great.

***

And that's as far as he read. :p

That was the year after tell him. TPE have played Glastonbury at least twice that I know of! :D I saw them the year The Pogues were on, too. They were very good that year, too.

I sometimes wonder if you and me have led the same life, marty. Same job, same festivals. You're gonna tell me your g/f that year was called Nicola now, aren't you? :D

I'm sure he blames you for his current financial destitution. He now lives in a shed and only eats Tesco Value bread.

Tell him I'm sorry I never bought any of their albums either, but at the time I was living in a shed and only eating Tesco Value bread. Because I was in less than hugely successful bands too.

I was a huge Undertones fan, and liked what I heard of TPE, in more recent and wealthy times I got hold of a copy of Damian O'Neill's A Quiet Revolution. However I haven't yet gotten around to filling in the other not quite Undertones gaps.

You don't think he never googles his name and TPE, for Christ's sake it's not like he has a really common name anyway.

If you google Atomic Suplex it's practically all U75 posts.

He is going to find out.

TBF TPE are/were considerably more famous and successful than Atomic Suplex.

Loved TPE, bought most of their stuff and saw them live many times.

always a bit wary of bands that reform though, sometimes it works, sometimes it defiles the memory of your youth.

will reserve judgement till i see them though... and i will see them, which i suppose is a compliment. Was recently asked to go and see a reformed spear of destiny and turned it down without hesitation

I've been listening to TPE on Last FM, loving their stuff again, will buy some - although the choice is limited to itunes really, they seem a bit pricy on amazon, and ebay only have LPs and cassettes:confused: and i have never done any of that torrent stuff

used CD of babble, going for £25.99 on amazon, £25.99!!!

IIRC they were the 2nd band that I went to see , reckon it was 1991 at Glasgow Student Union. Always loved the name too.

I loved that one and that video is my most vivid memory of him

the whole thing is burnt into my soul because of the second day of shooting(the studio stuff,,,fish etc) I also worked on this

talk about being a "crew slut". :o

iirc I shot the telly and the china figurine with an air rifle, started seriously working as a ALCM & some other braggy stuff that really go me going in vids ...which was nice.

Hold on, let me get this right, you shot things (with a gun) in 80s videos. That was your role on set?
