That old favorite - microwaving rice

If you cook rice yourself, you have a vague idea how many hours its been at room temperature (all the while breeding shit that cant be destroyed).

If it came with a takeaway, you have absolutely no idea.

i've never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from bad rice. bad squid, yes, bad beef or pork or chicken, yes, bad sausage, yes

Do you wear rubber gloves when you go to the bathroom, just to be sure that you don't come in contact with anything dangerous?:D

Not if you reheat it with a touch of water in the bottom, and place a loose cover over the top, so that the steam produced can re steam the rice.

You can do the same thing in a hot frying pan with a tiny drop of water. Or if it's risotto you can make it into patties and fry it. Oh my god.

Why does the American version only take 90 seconds, while the same thing over here (only it's called Uncle Ben's Express instead) takes TWO MINUTES

Am I am losing 30 seconds of my life everytime I use it?

Bacillus Cereus in endemic in rice & thanks to bad cooking/keeping practice, it is now also a major carrier for e-coli. Both of which can be bloody nasty.

the american version has a different formulation because we tend to be more impatient and more into "instant gratification"...

no, not if you use that 30 seconds to do something productive

re OP - I've been reheating rice all my life with no problems whatsoever, but pogo has put the fear of fucking god into that, and I'll never be the same again :D

exactly! like we don't already have enough shit to worry about and now people are saying rice will kill you....well i don't buy it, not for one second

yeh, well i fucking buy it

the guy sorted me out on a dental related abcess problem a coupla years ago, and I trust him :D

Nope, secondary toxins cannot be destroyed by any amount of heating (short of total incineration) & they can be far worse than almost any bacterial poisoning as they can remain in your system & keep coming back to haunt you for many months after.

You will know why when it hits you!

For all rice costs & the ease of preparing it, why risk it?

Thanks, i've got in-built rice bacteria-busting antibodies...i've had this condition for over 30yrs :D

I don't mean this is a bad way, but I hope all of you unbelievers are struck down with rice poisoning :hmm: :p

You can certainly get food poisoning from rice, and I'm sure a lot of people think that you can't. One of the foulest things I have ever smelt that didn't involve maggots was from a saucepan full of rice that somebody in an old flat had left out for about a week, with the lid on.

What that fact seems to have turned into, though, is an urban myth that if you reheat rice it will KILL YOU DEAD. If you get some rice from a takeaway, if it was okay when you got it the chances of it being okay after a night in the fridge are extremely high. And reheating isn't going to change that either way really. Just, you know, don't leave it out all night and then think "oh it's rice it'll be fine only meat goes off". If you'd reheat a curry in the same situation why not the rice?

Oooooooooh! :hmm:

I don't have testicles though ;)

I don't doubt that ladies also have bits that could be adversely affected by it.

The warning shots from my kidneys were also no fun, as was the potential for liver failure. That was from a strain of e-coli. The rice-specific bacillus cereus also adds necrosis, gangrene & maybe even brain damage to the mix! :p :D
