Thailand, bar girls and marriage

And another thing!

There are many bar girls who are very nice people, doing their best to get on in their lives.

Never went with any, but met loads and would totally agree with that. Good fun with their twisted Thai girl sense of humor.

Did I ever get, even a hint, of what was truly going through their heads? Not a hope in hell.

That doesn't sound like much of a choice to me - poverty or sleep with a bloke for money :(

In developing and third world countries it's not a bad choice at all.

One thing about this situation here in thailand, thais are very well able to get rid of any problems they have in life by simply not thinking about the problem. That might seem difficult to a westerner, but it seriously seems to work for thais! So, many women working the bar scene, while maybe not wanting to, they can blank out what they are doing, and enjoy their lives as normal outside of the work time.

Furthermore, many girls working in bars most definitely do enjoy what they do.

Yes, a lot of fun too!

Because i speak thai i can get into some interesting conversations with them, and they really are as human as any other human. They have higher powers than themselves to which they have to answer for in life. The highest being their family, parents in particular. Westerners have a high sense of individualism, whereas thais don't, and will often do things in a sort of sacrifice way in order to please others, or to do what they perceive as a duty.

Incidentally the villages they come from are often harmonious places where everyone is poor, but they all have food, water, laughter, and often wonderful views and nature. Once a girl earns all this western money, goes back, has a concrete house built and so on, jealousy sets in amongst the other villagers, gossip bites, and the harmony is busted.

Worth thinking about in general about wealth disparity and how it affects humans.

Going back to the article, nowhere does the journalist ever mention interviewing any of the women.
It reads to me like memsahib journalist goes out to the Far East, spends all her time in the 'British Club', whatever that is, avoiding Johnny Foreigner, gets cornered by some old drunk who comes out with a story about how his wife worships his cock, returns to the UK with precious little material, pads out story with the usual p.c. cliches and an editor who must have been desperate for material that week decided to publish it.
Bar-girls have to work a lot harder for a lot less.

That sounds spot on mate!

The British Club is for full on ex-pats, who live the expat way of life. It's bang in the middle of bangkok. I've been there once for a christmas lunch, and it was really not my cup of tea.
