Test your broadband speed

The TV cable network was designed for downloading (TV) - so as a data network you don't get the upload speeds of ADSL. Unless you're making and distributing TV recordings and mixes it isn't really an issue.

I suppose it depends how much you're paying for these multimedia files and who is running the server that's supplying them.
The ISP only sets the maximum speed and probably isn't the weak link in the chain.

At least that's my understanding.

Install Netmeter and find out where the bottleneck is. :)

Paying? Ha!

not but you may not have the right modem.

If you are with vigin make sure they have upgraded your modem to the little black one and it isn't one of the 'surfboard' type big white ones...

I had this running argument with them about it for ages as my speed had dropped off, i'm still a meg under and about 300K under my upload but that's liveable...

Nah, I have the little black box :hmm:

I'm getting less than a meg! Should I complain? If so, to whom? It says my ISP is Crapphone Whorehouse but I thought it was AOL.

I thought mine was supposed to be stupidly fast cos of the fibre optics - have I been had?

Yes. Every telco uses fibre at some point for something (even just a phone call) and a fibre optic route (or the hardware it's connected to) can get congested just like a copper one. But the ISP sales pricks like to try and 'wow' people with talk of fibre, like it's some sort of amazing new breakthrough.

Was there a more recent thread? Had a search but couldn't find one hence this mega-bump.
Have just moved into a new flat, went with Virgin Media - XL connection:

This is using wifi not a wired connection to the router.
Seems pretty good as the advertised rate is 30Mb but will see later if the Throttling Gates of Doom descend...

Doesn't it only limit you if your uploading/downloading lots?

I hope so seeing as I'm getting a 30mb connection next week from them!!
