Tesco Grocery Delivery

When I had a house full of people, I used to use the Tesco delivery often. What I have discovered is that the quality of the produce and even the quality of the substitutions depends on which branch you live near!

I had some bizarre substitutions, too. The best one being when they substituted cod in parsley sauce when I had asked for parsley!

Although I can see why it would be tempting to put "no substitutions" for everything, it can be annoying if you have an empty larder, and the food arrives without the specific loaf of bread you asked for, when there were lots of possible substitutions. Because it saves your settings, it's worth putting in the bit of effort to mark your instructions for each substitution.

But why would you tip? Never occurred to me to do such a thing!

tsk - bad as me

get thee to the docs - might get it fixed AND save yourself a delivery fee!

they'd probably say "pulled muscle, give it a rest" or "early onset arthritis, not a lot you can do about it" or "torn ligament or tendon", or "we'll give you a painful steriod injection" or something like that :o

It could be frozen shoulder. My mum and gran have both got that, and my shoulder's been a bit sore recently too :hmm:

So overall, what do you think of grocery deliveries? Give us a mark out of ten.

Well once I'd finally done it on the internet (which took over 3 hours due to error messages which I hope won't happen next time :D ), I'd give it 8 out of 10.

I'm deducting two points. 1/2 because they substituted 20 teabags for 100 teabags when I figure there must have been plenty of other flavoured teas that came in 20s. 1/2 because I asked for as few carrier bags as possible and there were dozens. One bag even had only one chunk of cheese in :D. 1/2 for their time slots purely because they don't agree with me :o (ie. 5-7pm - 5.00pm not back from work so that's a dodgy slot which meant I had to have 7.00-9.00pm and he arrived in the middle of us eating our dinner and watching Benders). 1/2 point for not having any Jasmine Rice, Choc Chip Cookies or Mangos.

I got my delivery today....last night they'd made a mistake on the Olay face cream stuff and had it down as 1/2 price...reduced from £4.98 to £2.99. I knew it was an error - £4.98 IS the half price cost, but ordered one and although it showed as £4.98 when I ordered and although when I checked this morning, they'd obviously discovered the error...cos all the Olay stuff showed as 'not in stock' for about half an hour and then back at the correct prices :D ...the nice man on the helpline still knocked the extra £2.49 off cos I said that that's what it had said when I ordered.

I also ordered a half shoulder of lamb...the smallest option (out of 7) for £2.21...expecting it to be a bit more, but hoping it would be nowehere near the advertised 'maximum pack price' of £4.78. It was £5.97...HUGE! So he knocked £3.78 off that too...woohooooo (I couldn't really have argued much if he'd only offered the difference between the max price given and the actual price, cos there's no guarantee with meat weight, so that's a risk you take, so that was a result!).

Always, ALWAYS call them if there's a problem (excluding subs, which you have the opportunity to refuse on delivery) - they're very good with refunds - and if you happen to speak to someone who's apparently having a very bad day and seems determined to catch you out in some imagined tuna steak scam :hmm: :D (as has happened to me)...then either ask to speak to someone else, call back (she said she'd get a supervisor to call me back, but obviously never did  ) or email.

Think you can opt to have NO BAGS, but not 'a few bags'... :hmm:

Minnie - it gets much easier to order once you've done a few...just go to favourites and it'll list all the things you have bought before, which makes it MUCH quicker (since lots of the stuff you order is likely to be standard on each delivery).

Did you find a working voucher?!

normally I would say that there's normally few problems with tesco, but I can't seem to get their site to work today

like sheo says, customer services are good - they've never quibbled anything that I've had to phone them about.

I'm sure there was an option for "as few bags as possible"

Yes, found a £7 off £70 voucher and used that thanks, but unfortunately I couldn't get the £5 off Quidco as I kept getting error messages on it, so had to abandon using it and go directly to Tesco website

I like to get the deliveries because I loathe and despise shopping in supermarkets, well, shopping full stop really. I only get the fruit and veg if desperate - otherwise I get all that from the local grocers. It's alright :)
I get a home delivery about once a month - just for bulk stuff, tins, bottles, etc - it's a god send when you haven't got a car and the nearest supermarket is a 20 minute walk (especially if you're as lazy as me).

And an added bonus is that I don't have to wander around a huge supermarket wondering what the hell it is I actually need - I'm not big on making lists... With the online thingy it remembers what I ordered last time, so I just tick all the boxes again and it's done  Also means I don't have to endure the hell of supermarket musical chairs, when they decide in their infinite wisdom it's time to put the baked beans where the dog food used to be or move the tomato ketchup up 2 shelves so those of us with grocery dyslexia think they've sold out...

Never get fresh stuff delivered though, I get that locally.

You're using bags for life to save teh planet, yet you already recycled your carriers by using them as bin liners.

I do the same thing, but use the bags as poop scoops, but now have to buy poop scoops, which is really defeating the object.

oh right, thought you wree taking the piss :o

I have home delivery every week, we started using it when we seriously started collecting tesco points as we usually get 1000 points per shop (£10 worth in vouchers), we used to get about £20 worth of vouchers a quarter and now we get over £200 without spending any more than we normally do.
It's well worth it for us as not only have a just paid for a 4 grand holiday with the vouchers (saved in one year) but also I don't over spend, I only get what I want, I used to find that when I was in the store I would buy loads more that what I actually needed.
as regards to subsitutions etc, I always put that I want a long expiry on my items and clearly state what they can and can't subsitute, once you have done your first shop all your items are saved in your favs so you can just go to that list and pick from there, I also check out all their deals such as the buy two get one free etc for stuff for the kids
if you want more info on how to collect some serious clubcard points go to www.paidtoshop.co.uk and they will show you how to do it and what the codes are (when there are some)

I don't think I've figured out how to collect points yet :o

Oh god yes  If I DO end up doing it 'manually', I reckon I walk about 10 miles, going up and down the friggin shop cause nothing is where it should be, logically :mad:

She doesn't tip. I wouldn't bother, you don't tip the checkout staff, do you?
I did once, when the driver hadn't been given the proper address by Tescos, it was Christmas Eve and it was a big Christmas food order and he didn't give up till he'd found me at about 11pm plus lifts not working to the floor of my flat. He said he wasn't allowed to accept tips but I forced him to take a tenner and a bottle of Cava.

I had my delivery yesterday cos this thread reminded me about it. I spent a bit more time than usual on the substitutions list (instead on 'no substitutes') and made notes of what type of thing they could substitute e.g. with ricotta I said they could substitute with cottage cheese (which would have worked with the recipe I needed it for).

In the end there were hardly any substitutes and where there were, they were absolutely fine and exactly what I asked for.

10/10

And I also bought a new washing machine on Tesco Direct, I used a price checker and it was the cheapest of the retailers for that model. And it was on triple clubcard points and free delivery. So if that gets delivered OK I'm going to be really pleased and not a little relieved.

I haven't got a clubcard :(

I started using Tescos home delivery during my last couple of years in Edinburgh. I was working a 60 hour week and it was the only way to ensure I had some food in the house. Never had a problem with the Edinburgh deliveries, substitutions were fine and the food always had a reasonable expiry on it. There was also a tesco Metro within walking distance if I needed anything between shops.

Since moving to Aberdeen, I've become reliant on the deliveries as it's two bus rides to the nearest supermarket. Most of the time the deliveries are okay, but yesterday they delivered me some lettuce that was starting to turn brown (didn't notice until I was putting it in the fridge) and once last summer there were half a dozen random items that weren't on my order (nothing I'd eat, mind). What was most annoying was that the delivery guy would say he was in a rush, dump the crates in my living room and leave after I'd signed for it!

I think it's really dependent on the area you live in.

Ring the number on the delivery sheet and they'll refund the money.....I've had no problem about this.
I only get heavy stuff from Tesco (eg tins of value tomatoes...the cheapest I've ever found...cheaper even than Lidl) delivered once a month. I do the rest of my shopping in Brixton market & Lidl.

I'd love to buy more fresh stuff when I need it, but with no supermarkets within easy reach (apart from M&S ) I don't have much of a choice. There's nowhere to buy fresh fruit and veg at reasonable prices here, and I work full time too.
