Terry Gilliam should have directed Narnia or His Dark Materials or both

I vote for Frank Capra.
Who last made a film in 1961 and is now dead. I know this is a hypothetical thread but there's no need to make it a hypothetical zombie thread :p

..and it's also not like Capra made "fairy tale" films that created the kind of worlds we are talking about. Even his more fantastical films were rooted in the real world.

What about a Scandinavian director - I'm always hearing about how their culture is infused with myths and fairytales....I don't actually know of any but that's my amazing idea of the day.

A stunner of an idea, especially as you can't think of one. :D

I never finished the Narnia film - it was horrible....

I wish they'd take more risks with this material as well, brainy.
I guess you're right - risk is the issue.

It was even difficult to pinpoint what was wrong with the Narnia film. It was well made, fairly faithful to the book, okay acting, okay effects. It just *felt* wrong. Like someone said - like it was put together by a committee. No creativity or understanding behind it - just money :(

I love kids fantasy and I thought the LOTR bandwagon would create loads of good films - I should have realised that the moneymen would be the doom of the entire genre. Now I wish fantasy films were still out of fashion and had to struggle with small budgets - at least you got a gem every now and then.

The best recent kids fantasy film was the very non-LOTR, non-Narnia and fairly low budget Bridge to Terabithia. I don't think it was very successful though - a lot of people haven't even heard of it.

Is that the one that's part of the Jumanji universe? Or am I thinking about something totally different?
No, it was from a book - which I haven't read. Don't know how faithful to the book it is.

No, that was Zathura, which was great actually, much better than Jumanji. Jon Faverau who directed that and Elf has a good eye for design, a sense of humour and he can tell a story. He would be great with a big budget fantasy film.

I'm one of the universe's three people who quite liked Jumanji, so I might have to check that out :)

James Cameron doing a kids fillm would be

Ken Loach would focus on the oppression of the Gyptians and Serafina Pekkala's witches

David Lynch does Narnia - Aslan vomits up the world's salvation while the Wicked Witch has a tea party and cheers, then kills Mr Beaver, who nonetheless continues to walk around, bleeding constantly. Peter has an epiphany and fucks all his brothers and sisters one by one, then kills himself. Fin.
