Tempted by island life

Wookey

I'm from Guernsey, which is bigger and more cosmopolitan than Alderney (about 65000 people as opposed to 2500).

And I would call Guernsey small, narrow minded, reactionary, corrupt and bigoted.

And I have to say - at least Guernsey is beautiful, whereas Alderney is very bleak.

House prices in Guernsey are averaging 340000 ish I think now - I couldn't afford to move back even if I wanted to - I don't know if Alderney is as bad?

I wouldn't recommend it all - think you have made the right decision.

Nah, I'm not really interested in journalism, it's was only ever a means to an end. It's not like a career or anything.

I'd rather sell snowglobes and lollypops in a nice little shop.:)
Even if the shop is fully of reactionary bigots?

The fact that all cute little isolated communities are all apparently full of cunts is really depressing... My dreams of fleeing are hereby gonna be limited to cities or solitude.

Thanks for the advice. Once again it appears the distance between my dreams and the reality is too far for hope to breach.

If you fancy it, try it for a year or so. If you find you don't like it, you can always move back, or somewhere else.

An online buddy of mine that I've chatted to a lot moved to an island. She says ppl are attracted to island life, move there for a few yrs and then move on if they get fed up.

How much did you like it up north Wookey?? Iirc one of the papers up there is needing someone, but I think you would need to drive. Tis pretty rural and little/no public transport.
I could look for the ad if you like?

Lot's of negative crap from people that have never even been to the island. I lived on Alderney for 3 years and loved it, i go back for Aldereny week in August which is a week long piss up, never met anyone that was homophobic or a bigot in anyway, just very kind people always up for a laugh. Winters can be harsh but same can be said for many places, just try to get off as often as you can, France is only a short boat trip away as are the rest of the channel islands, lived in Guernsey for a while also.
Summer n Alderney is wonderful, the place comes alive, no pollution, zero crime, bunker and quarry parties and people from all walks of life, two friends happen to be gay and have lived on the island for years, trouble free. Whatever you decide, go and spend a week there during Alderney week, people go back every year for it, its another world :)

Just to add, people from Guernsey and Jersey love to slag off Alderney and most people that do have never even been, i must admit i was one of those people. I have lived in worse places

My friend lives in Jersey and it's much the same there. She is originally from Lancashire and was treated really badly in her first couple of jobs there. She's a working class girl and the bitchy girls wouldn't accept her.

She has settled in now but it took a couple of years and she admits that it's extremely racist and homophobic. Everything revolves around how much money you've got and much as it's a beautiful place I would never go for more than a short holiday.

The main problem would be renting a place to live - the rental market is probably hugely inflated because of the tourists on short-lets....my other half is a landscape artist so I'm sure he could sell stuff to the tourists, but having a decent place to live might be very difficult....

I was only saying last night that I want to move out of the country, go somewhere with a proper sense of community...

Couldn't you just rob kill and dismember tourists? If Bergerac is owt to go by, the local plod are too busy sorting out their own family issues to get involved in anything else.

And you are never more than 3 miles from the sea, ideal for disposing of body parts.

Plus, you could write it all up as a novel.

I commend to you, earnestly, these suggestions.

Nice idea, while it lasted. No point torturing myself with goons, though, I'm looking for peace, not a scrap.:D

Anyone know of any gay-friendly little islands with vacancies for writers, lemme know.;)

What you're actually looking for, is one of our islands, like Salt Spring. None of this island xenophobia there...

Check out the local paper:

http://www.saltspringnews.com/

You and your partner would be welcomed on Salt Spring with open arms. And there's a good growing season for flowers, and fellow guitarists to strum on the beach with.

well, it's hardly a small island but it's quite a gay friendly city...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Times fired its top editor after he rejected a management order to cut $4 million from the newsroom budget, 14 months after his predecessor was also ousted in a budget dispute, the newspaper said Sunday.

I've heard Guernsey's so crap it's unbelievable. Definitely not somewhere you'd want to get stuck for a couple of months...

Crap if you have no friends or family i guess, certainly not some where to go for a holiday for example.

Thanks Gem but I can't drive. I've resisted it for years but I'm beginning to think I might well have to learn. (I would like to stay in the North for now though....I went to Buxton recently and really fancied moving there, but the chance of a good enough job is fairly slim...)

I like the way your mind works, and I would even get a novel plot from it all.

Mmmmmm.

*thinks again*

It actually looks lovely there!! And I could learn Canadadian no troubles! But do we have any residential rights as former colonial powers, or would I have to jump backwards through flaming hoops like you do to gain entry to the America?

:(

I don't know, I think it's easier. It must be, judging by the number of people living here with british accents.

Wookey, those Gulf Islands are little granola paradise spots of complete social and cultural tolerance, along with a place called the Sunshine Coast. The people who live there are often refugees from big city life, and they are very live and let live.

I honestly mean it: you should look into it. As a gay man with a partner, you won't find many better places to be than Vancouver and environs.

Like I said: life is short.
