Temp job hourly rate? (not a complaint about agencies)

My advice is to spend a few months living on minimum wage in London then when you're back on a proper wage you won't even know HOW to go over a budget :D

I'm kidding but it did work for me. Although I'm still on minimum wage... errr... but living so tight then now having more than exactly what I need means I get to the end of the month and have a full tum AND a bit of cash left over to spend on shite. Woot.

Exactly

Not that I can be arsed myself to make sarnies :o

What about tea/coffee? Do you make it at work or let yourself be ripped off by fancy coffee shops?

No! Thank god they have nice coffee here at work which is free :)

I was in the same situation as you and I was amazed how much I was able to save once I started writing things down, it really does make a big difference once you can see all your spending laid out in front of you.

You're quite right. I spend £1.50 on porridge and £2.40 on lunch every day. I'm an idiot.

So that's £4 a day almost, NOT £3. That's almost a monthly Zones 1-2 Travelcard.

Do you have a microwave at work?

Your not an idiot, most of us make poor spending choices like this without really realising it.

So say your spending £3.90 per work day and you work say 220 days a year (thats about the average) thats £858 a year on porridge and lunch! you should be able to reduce that to a quarter if you make everything at home and take it with you.

Cold, lumpy porridge :(

But think of the money you're saving! :D

Yes, but she can have it hot at work if she has a microwave. ;)

I get a box and I think it costs under £2 and it lasts me weeks. That, and a litre bottle of milk (which lasts me a week and costs £1) and a bag of sugar that lasts me for weeks - sorted for brekkie

If you're canny, you use the work milk that's there for teas and coffees ;)

You guys are inspiring  I have a microwave!

I will, in a considered manner, buy sammich and porridge makings at the weekend :)

Just had a tip and a wink to another agency so keep yer fingers crossed!

Right, so you can make porridge every day at work. DON'T get the microwaveable porridge that comes in packets as it's more expensive. Just get a box of oats and make it that way. Buy a bag of sugar. Buy 1 litre of milk every Monday (unless you make it with water which will save you even more money) and you're sorted. Obviously you'll need to take dishes to make porridge in or get a microwaveable bowl that you can microwave and eat from (thus saving on washing up ;)).

Now, I've asked the microwave question before when we got ours. There's loads you can do.

Baked spuds (with beans, tuna, chilli etc.)
Curries
Pasta dishes
Soups/Stews
Chilli con carne

erm... :o

Do you have a toaster? If you have a toaster, that's even better

Do you have a big fridge? If so, you can also buy a loaf of bread, freeze half of it at home, take other half in to work and make sarnies at work.

I am gonna start out small with sandwiches then work my way up to simple red slop sweet n sour sauces with noodles in tupperware, perhaps branching out to pre-baking a spud at home then bringing it in.

I know my limits.

got a shedload of agencies for you, which i think i gave to a 'jobseeking' urbanite about a year ago - a few of them were still paying what you're looking for when i was still looking for work in octoberish (i might've sent you their details before).

if you're actually looking for work, they tend to be quite good :)

if you're not really arsed about it, then they don't normally come up with the goods for you :)
(i quit jobsearching in october :o)

I'd do it the other way actually, you'd be surprised how much the porridge will fill you up, then you'll get an idea how long after you've eaten it, you'll be hungry and then you'll have an idea what to have in the afternoons

Well, that's what I do now. I have a small plain porridge at 9am then a sandwich and some crisps at lunchtime. Or a salad and some crisps at lunchtime. I like crisps.

What crisps do you get, fancy expensive ones? Do you buy them in single packs or multi-packs?

Where do you do your weekly/monthly shopping?

You're getting all excited about getting me organised aren't you? :D

I get a nice sandwich and S&V crisps from the Sandwich lady for £2.40, which is very very cheap for a central London snack-lunch. I will, in future, buy a multi-pack of Sainsbury's own brand lo-fat crisps to accompany my home-made sandwiches.

Trouble is I don't usually keep crisps in the house cuz I will just eat them. I'll have to be strong.

Yes, makes me feel like I'm doing it myself almost and saving myself a fortune :o:D

Bring the bag of crisps into work and lock it in a cupboard.

So, where do you do your food shopping?

In theory in Sainsbury's Whitechapel. In practise I pick bits up in Costcutter (does not cut costs) and Co-op too.

See? This is a major lifestyle change.
