Temp job hourly rate? (not a complaint about agencies)

If I calculate

Bills - (Wages x4.2) / 4.2 = 71

That doesn't sound completely undoable. I wonder where it goes? *pats belly and nurses hangover*

So that about 860 pm outgoings? and your taking home roughly 1200 pm? that should be plenty for going out/clothes etc if your careful.

25% rent reduction is not that horrid really.
If you managed to get this for three months your landlord would be £427.50 out of pocket.
The minimum it would cost him to get a new tenant (assuming the place was not empty for a single day) is £570

Writ down every penny you spend for a week and trust me you will find that you can make loads of savings through cutting out things you wont really notice. It the constant little things that all add up.

No - you are right. :)

as I just said on dragging thread - I'm not sure why i started this one  Did I want to boast about being poor and profligate? No - what I wanted is for someone to clue me in to a temp gig that I can start the Monday after next :D

Soz! I am all TERRIFIED and can't stop talking :(

How far do you travel to work that you have to pay £108pm out in travel costs? The next job you get might be closer, saving you a lot of money.

It's hard to say if £10ph is 'too much' without knowing what your skills are, but I have seen plenty of skilled temp jobs (like part-qualified accountants with several years' experience of different systems) advertised at well below £10ph. :(

Have you tried other agencies? what sector do you usually work in?

I k now its hard out there at the mo, every week another mate seems to be getting made redundant :(

I have been doing this budget thing to the nearest penny for a while now.
Every expense is calcuated down to the smallest thing and it helps a LOT.

I pay £120ish for my monthly travel
I could get away with £2 a day commute if I walked a lot longer.
Should do it really, or get a bike

I go on the tube from Stepney Green to Temple - it's 3.5 miles  If I got up earlier I could get the bus but this is moot as I probably won't have to make that journey every day in 9 days. If I do get another gig then I am certainly going to start using the bus instead of the tube.

I'm just an admin temp - I can't even do PowerPoint. A couple of years ago I was on £12ph at Capita and when that finished I strolled into another temp gig at £10ph la la la not a care in the world. I got a perm job last year, was loaded, went from super-cheap studio flat to a cheap flat even though I was loaded and could paid more then got made redundant anyway.

Ugh

I've worked for agencies in The NHS and the Civil Service, which I guess is a sector. I'm currently a PA but I don't like it, I'd rather be in a admin team, if I have to be doing this at all.

So public sector then? you'd likely earn less as an admin temp than a temp PA I'm afraid.

I think the rate sounds about right, when I was looking at temping I wanted 11-12 p/h, (I think the rates have gone down with recession too  ) how's about writing to places specutively?

The companies/charities won't have to pay recruitment agents their cut then, so might be able to pay you a bit more.

But its so much hassle for the Finance staff its usually much cheaper and easier to go through an agency than hire temps yourself.

It is right but no one's paying it so I can't get it

oh really? Can't you just do it as a self emplyed person rather than employee?

Could you set yourself up as one of those self employed exec assistants Stella? You'd think companies would want more temps/contractors as money gets tight....

Nah, not got the skills.

So why do I want £10ph, you might ask?

Cuz I do, that's why. I had the skills last year

Would you consider temping for a legal firm?

I registered with a temp agency last year that specialised in temps for the legal sector. They tend to get a couple of quid more per hour than average.

Yes, I would. Were they keen? How much legal exp did you need? Were you going for IT stuff or admin stuff?

I was just looking for general admin stuff at the time.

I'll try to find you the details this evening. Off the top of my head, I can't even remember the agency's name.

I had no legal experience at all.

I tried to get a job temping with a legal agency and they wouldn't have it, despite the fact that I worked in Chancery Lane and 40-50% of my work was legal.

They wanted someone with 2 years' experience doing 100% legal work.

Snotty bastards

Numbers - I've just gone back to getting a monthly pass. I'm paid up a month in advance with my rent which meant I had enough money to get a monthly pass.

How much do you spend at lunchtimes or do you bring your own sandwiches in?

This is exactly the type of little item that causes people to break their budgets, say your spending £3 a day buying a sandwich, thats 20 sandwiches a month = £60!

Exactly

Not that I can be arsed myself to make sarnies :o

What about tea/coffee? Do you make it at work or let yourself be ripped off by fancy coffee shops?
