temp agencies: advice / questions please..

Does anyone know any other good temp agencies. I have registered with Prospect-Us and have had no work yet. Lifeline Personnel got me to come in (after phoning me and emailing me a couple of times) only to tell me that they are only taking people with a certain amount of experience at the moment. Which apparently I don't have. Arseholes! GRRR!
I'm very pissed off! And broke!

With Prospectus you have to phone them every day, really hassle them for work. Once they get to know you you'll get work all the time ime.

Good luck!

SRS is an owner managed agency near St Christophers Place, off Oxford St. Established >10 years. Mainly secretarial/reception (temp and perm) but other types of vacancies and applicants too. They are very good, I know the owner who is great --- but also know loads of people who have used them with good reports.

edit: just checked the link... the website seems to be down atm. Best to ring if you're interested in registering I guess.

edit 2: spoke with them this morning, yes, problem with website which is being sorted. Best to ring.

one thing i have noticed in my (admittedly very short) experience is that prospectus are much friendlier, enthusiastic and pleasant than any of the others i've spoken to. i had heard this from other people (my friend's mum is the managing director, or something) but it makes a refreshing change to moody, grumpy, unhelpful staff. there is a nice atmosphere there.

This thread could be useful to me as well as I have just applied to the NHS agency for temp work in our local hospital.

NHS professionals??? hopefully they should be ok........as for other nursing agencies ive found them a bloody nightmare, promise you suitable work in your area, so you go through the nightmare process of registering (including a 30 quid CRB check for each agency) and give you fuck all!!!

am currently with 3, and get nowt! be warned!

(something is wrong with my space bar can you tell?)

Is that NHS Professionals? My friend joined them and has had nothing yet and they're taking forever to sort her paperwork

Options Employment Group Limited has made a great name for itself in the Construction industry recruitment marketplace. As the UK ’s no 1 supplier of Construction jobs we understand the market and the specific needs of the construction industry.
Jezza! I'm not a builder!
I do appreciate your contribution though.

it was yer shoulders which misled me :p :o
i honestly thought they were in office stuff as well. Rad nance swears by Adecco. team support services in Stratford have an office division

It normally takes 8 weeks (ish) to sort out, it's the police check which normally takes the time.

If you haven't got any experience on the wards then you normally have to do 3 voluntary shifts. I prefer earlies as there's more to do and the time goes quicker.

Normally people get put on elderly care as they are so understaffed but I like the oldies.

If you work on a ward for a while and they like you they tend to put your name and telephone number in their contacts book themselves and bypass NHS professionals and call you direct when they need you. It's up to you whether you take it or not.

The money is good as well, I work most sundays and it's paying for my childcare during the weeks while I have to study.

a good temp consultant is worth her (it's usually her) weight in gold.
however, they are human like the rest of us, so this is how I would play them; to begin with, take every assignment, however shitty. ALWAYS be punctual, and AT ALL COSTS ring in advance if you can't make it to a booking; the temp cons who thinks you'll let her down is the one who simply won't submit you.

Quite surpised to read that. Do other people think that is good advice?

hmm, well i've always completed contracts (except for the one i bailed on to take the one i'm in now) and i've spent more time out of work this year than in it.

i'm with tpp.co.uk which is very good. i would always have recommended harris hill until recently, when they sacked me for not completing a three day contract as i'd been given a four week contract at a higher rate of pay by another angency.

She's been waiting probably 4 months and already temps for another nursing agency. Suppose she'll just have to carry on waiting

Hello everybody

I used to work as a agency consultant for Adecco. Temping can be extremely frustrating at times and you might get treated quite shitly by your employers. The main thing to do you want to get jobs is be very pally with the consultants. Always go into the office personally and smile and be friendly. I remember having so many lists of available temps to choose from and not many jobs to assign them to. At the end of the day most people can use MS Office and the company teaches you their internal systems so I could only judge people on enthusiasm and 'loveliness'. Try and get as many feet in doors as possible. Do as many early poo jobs as you can so the consultants will remember you and select you for the better ones. You might have to whore yourself out for a bit but it's a good way to get into permanent jobs since you get to try out many new things and meet so many random people.

Hope that helps somewhat.

I've always temped through Pertemps, both in England and Scotland, and found them to be very helpful and they got me work very quickly all the times I used them. When you go in, dress as if you are going to work in an office, smile, be polite, take a cv in. I did that, was on their books straight away, and had work within 24 hours.

Godd luck vixen.

it all worked out pretty well in the end.

i am currently working for at least a month (they plan to extend it though and said that they hope i will be there for a while) for the stroke association.
as i predicted office temping doesn't feel as bad when you are working for charities. they just needed a temp and got a health psychologist so are pretty pleased and plan to extend my duties to make the job more interesting for me.
they all seem pretty nice.
the only problem is that i absolutely hate the world of work as a concept. i hate getting up at 6:45am every day, i hate the tube, i hate being tired on a friday evening, i hate feeling like i have to be in bed just after midnight most weekday nights, i hate dressing up smartly for work and i hate the sunday night 'oh no, work tomorrow' feeling.
apart from that all is well.

i will continue to apply for psychology research jobs and the plus side is that i read for about three hours during the hours of 8am-6pm. escaping this way makes the world of work seem less miserable, i guess.

i am still trying to work out if feeling like i *mustn't* go on urban at work is a good thing or a bad thing. i haven't been on at work yet and i think it's probably a good thing that i don't associate urban with work. i can imagine my usage spiralling out of control again, otherwise..

thanks for the advice everyone: especially those that recommended prospect-us.
