Tell me where to live in London

I've recently moved to Manor House/Finsbury Park, and am loving it.

Am on a quiet road but it's only about 10 mins walk to Finsbury Park for two tube lines and an overground in Zone 2. I tend to get buses everywhere though and it usually takes me less than an hour door to door from my gaff to work/uni in Russell Square. Two nice parks nearby too.

I is hearting North London, after living in and around Brixton for the last 7 years or so.

This makes me sad.

:(

See? /\ /\

of course you don't need to spend long south of the river to appreciate how truly marvellous north london is. an hour or so is usually enough for me.

North of the river is great, I can see myself retiring there one day, the south is no place for an old man who can't take the pace any more.

Good choice.

Some of the locals are a bit weird, though.
:hmm:

LOL... who was it that got on a bus with someone playing a banjo on the top deck?

*looks for thread*

OOoo we were thinking of Finsbury Park actually, will have a look, thanks.

Actual Finsbury Park, where you come out of the station is a bit on the grim side, but there are lots of nice residential streets a few minutes walk away. Stoke Newington isn't far too for a sorta East Dulwich experience for resaturants, trendy wine bars and shops that sell lots of stuff you don't actually need. No co-op though, as far as I know :(

You deserter

I've lived in Catford (which is shit) and Muswell Hill (which is nice but posh and posey) so cant really offer any advice other than dont go to those two. Finsbury park is quite nice though, and just on the acceptable side of rah

Wanstead.

Has a Central Line station which connects you to central London in a short while, and has a nice vibe about the place with decent places to eat and drink. :)

Muswell Hill

...is full of cunts, the pubs are all shite and everything costs too much. AVOID.

seven sisters/south tottenham, manor house, finsbury park, stokey, dalston, london fields, bow, homerton, clapton and mile end are all good in a north/east london type way. :)

south's alright, nice place to visit but the inhabitants defend it with the kind of vigour that means you know there must be something wrong with it- like a used car salesman trying to push an utter lemon on you IYSWIM.

Commuting to Kensington can be a bugger sometimes. I commuted from Crouch End to Kensington once and lost interest real quick. Move to Belgravia. that's nice and close for y'all.

e2a: Stoke Newington is a bitch to get to.

Like these guys said.

I live just down the road in Newington Green/Canonbury and I can get to Central London in about 20 mins on the buses!
on a fucking good day! when there's a fucking x in the month!

takes 15 mins from the angel to euston at half seven in the morning: no way you can better that from newington green

Stoke Newington is a bitch to get to!!!
not when you live there is it?!

hackney is still wonderful, avoid anywhere west (snobs), south of the river (plain wierd) and most places out chingford way (bit stand-offish to say the least).

east dulwich has a damned fine co-op apparently......but croydon has trams and mystery guest as well!!!!

sunny dalston is the centre of all life and will one day be the destination for pilgrims seeking to understand the mysterious complexities of life's rich tapestry.

Your right. As I only have a 15 min walk to work I do tend to get the buses outside of rush hour!

Still, when it has been busy it's never taken me over 45 mins to get to Tottenham Ct Rd.

Places I've liked living, or have thought I might like living.

Brixton, Elephant and Castle, Harringay, Finsbury Park, Stepney, Shepherds Bush, Westbourne Park, Stoke Newington, Tooting, Crouch End.

Places I've not liked living.

Bermondsey, Acton, Hammersmith, Clapham Common, Camden, Harrow.

Places I have deliberately avoided living.

Harlesden, Peckham, Battersea, Fulham, Hoxton, anywhere too far out from the centre.

Things I have learned about choosing a place to live. The most important things are decent neighbours and a flat that isn't either falling down or infested with pests (cf decent neighbours). Commuting for more than an hour each way is a right royal pain in the arse. By and large covering these essentials doesn't leave a lot of choice.
