Tell me something about Brixton that'll make me paranoid

To be honest, I think the lack of manners, or good sense really, are closer to home. Your first post was incredibly provocative. You don't seem shy of jumping to conclusions yourself either (e.g. suggesting Hendo is not a journalist). Perhaps we should all just rewind and start again, now you seem to have established your bona fides.

I'm game for taking back everything I've said. I'm fully aware of message board etiquette and I suppose deep down I should've realised there was no need to jump in with a thread that would annoy people.

err...you mean, exactly as you did with Hendo on this thread? or am I missing something?

Ratunda whatever your intentions - and I don't believe they were bad - what it looks like you are doing is asking people to confirm and strengthen the image of Brixton put out in the media by lazy, bigoted journalists.

Not saying you meant to do that, just explaining what it looks like to people and that (added to an imo unhealthy level of paranoia) is why they have reacted as they have.

Yeah totally, I'm treating him with the same contempt he treated me with. Can't say fairer than that can ya?

Cool, I totally understand.

Just don't see where "bin this thread" comments are going to get anyone. It's like, "I don't like what's been written, instead of arguing my case it'd be a lot easier to obilterate it". Sounds like Nazi Germany mentality to me - if you don't like something, set fire to it.

ratunta, what is it with your tagline 'wide open beavers'? what are you trying to say with that?

just asking for information. :)

It's from "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut. It's not meant to be offensive, but I'll remove it if anyone objects.

indeed, so it is. i was just wondering why you chose it as a tagline. in context, in the book, it is an interesting, if rather dated, meme. under your username it's a little confusing.

I like the questions it raises. Who owns these beavers? Why are they wide open? What must their daddys think?

As for dated? It's old, certainly, but dated is an opinion. You really ought to have stated as much so as not to get my blood boiling

It's as fresh a meme as it was in '73, his view of America and where it was headed was boderline prophetic, all summed up in one offensive phrase. In my opinion.

You know, the kind of thinking that keeps tabloid newspapers in circulation.
It seems a bit rich to complain about 'knee jerk' responses - what other reaction did you expect from such a tabloid-style thread?

if you really, genuinely, want to find out about brixton, read the local newspapers, search google, go to the tate library and do some research, talk to locals, talk to shopkeepers and stall holders, search urban75. It's not difficult. :)

He's not that interested BH.

He'd rather come on here and dredge up negativity about this area, and wind up people who post here.

personally, although you have defended your tagline well, i think you have chosen it to be inflammatory and offensive. the context you speak of is too obscure for a lot of us to understand (certainly me, at least). the term 'beaver', as in slang for vagina, is not really in common use any more, i thought. not in the uk, at least. that's what i meant by dated.

calm down, calm down - no need for blood boiling over such a trivial matter. :)

Tabloid-style thread eh? Give me a definition of tabloid-style and then show me how my thread falls into that definition. I think most people would agree by now that the thread was ironic.

PS "Too many junkies in Brixton". Rich indeed.

Hee hee, my blood wasn't really boiling. Honestly though, say the word and I'll remove it.

ARRRRRRGH! Stop fucking accusing me of dredging up negativity about fucking Brixton. I live here and was curious. I'll post my fucking address and you can come round and we can discuss it like gentlemen - by that I mean by wearing monacles and drinking sherry together.

i'm not here to moderate anyone's taglines. i've just given my opinion, is all. i'm sure you can decide for yourself whether or not you should change it. i dare say you could come up with something wittier and more meaningful. it is entirely up to you, however. :)

I have to say when you first questioned it I immediately checked yours to find fault but yours is witty and concise and I wish tee fook I'd thought of it. I've changed it anyway, was waiting to see if anyone got the quote I guess it was wishful thinking.

yes, you can, actually - a lot fairer. It was you, not Hendo, who kicked into bigtime cussing with
What I didn't kiss enough ass and go along with everyone elses opinions enough? You fucking prick.
at his suggestion of binning the thread (a suggestion he had every right to make), and of you trolling. And I don't know whether you are a troll or not - I hate leaping to quick judgements - but, reading earlier bits of this thread, wouldn't you say that you certainly could be interpreted as trolling? And don't you think it's understandable that someone could come to that conclusion?
However, I do accept that your last few posts have been thoroughly reasonable.
(Also re; binning. A lot of threads HAVE to be binned, eventually, and the forums pruned regularly, as this site is big and popular, and the server can only take so much-and oh sweet christ let me not be tempting fate here)

:D

have to admit to not having read 'breakfast of champions' (just googled for an extract), although have read a couple of others by vonnegut. i will amend that before too long. :)

I took this thread as an opportunity to talk about the way humans communicate in a city environment. I'm interested in that - body language, attitude, what is really aggressive, what is just different ways of doing things. It was interesting until people started going on about grammar and boring internet nerd stuff. :(

"I'm better educated than you" - ner, ner, ner.... oh piss off!

Weird - some people find me so difficult but I feel no antagonism to RatundaMcthing.

:)

I hear ya. But you didn't see the post Hendo put up and then removed did you? About me having a face like a burst sausage? He said I had the kind of face only a mother could abort. Also that I looked like a bucket of smashed crabs. And I was quite gutted when he said I was so ugly that if he woke up beside me in the morning he'd have to send my face back to the maker. He's a total body facist.

It's RatunTa, gruddamn it!

As for the grammar thing, it is twatty, I do admit. But I was arguing semantics not grammar.

i don't believe a word of that! :D neither did i like what you said about hendo. if it's true and hendo removed his alleged insults then you should remove your strange comment about his wee and a sheep. imvho. :)

Er, no Hatboy, it was Ratunda who started the 'grammar stuff' off with this:

I think you'll find that's "I rest my case". "My case rests " has to be followed with what your case rests on, e.g. "My case rests on the photo of Hendo spraying his white wee-wee like a fucked up oil rig all over a lamb's freshly sheared back".

Were we expected to ignore it? He was, afterall, the person who started the whole thread off.

And surely people are entitled to say if they think he's a troll?

As it happens, it seems he is not a troll and he has expressed regret for the manner in which he kicked this thread off.

Of course it's not true. But imagine it was, what kind of a nasty piece of work would write that? If Hendo had written that I don't think anyone could stand by him. They were terrible things to say about someone, and if Hendo truely had written any of it I'd have to say he is a very bad person. But he didn't.

Je ne regrette rien.

Plus, as I've gone to such pains to point out, I never questioned his gruddamn grammar. It was a question of symantics. How many times do I have to write it? The S and Y and the M and the A and the N and the T and the I and the C and the other S on my keyboard are getting worn out. I can see the wirez underneath, wot if I get a shok off them? I'd sue you.

Every night the screws let the inmates out of Brixton Prison to go for a drink in the pubs and bars of Brixton. Most nights there's no trouble, but around 2 times a week, some poor, gullible person, new to Brixton, gets murdered
