Tell me about West Dulwich

i still want to know about local amenities!

When I was at school my friend lived in West Dulwich - she use to use the Dulwich college swim pool to go swimming.
The Rosendale Road church does a good jumble sale.
New Leaf project at West Dulwich train station did sell second hand books.
There is a radio museum on Rosendale Road (though some might say it is more West Norwood)

... think I've covered what I know.

When I was a teen I was booted out of the Rosendale pub.

I went to the Paxton recently for the first time in years, last time i went it was in a vaguely glamorous phase and had mirrors above the urinals, that kind of thing.

last time i went, it was all stripped wood and rammed full of toddlers. nice range of beer though.

we also went here, where they were giving away free beer on a Saturday afternoon, something they do half regularly I think http://www.gipsyhillbrewing.com/

You could be related to one of them, as it goes Orang Utan ;)

I used to live on Thurlow Hill. Great place to live. Lots of nice bits like birdsong, parks, etc but near enough to Palace, Herne Hill and Brixton. Best place to live in London, for me.

The Railway by Tulse Hill is the best pub in the area. Especially in the summer with its wicked garden.

it's nice, but it's not really in the area

where is west dulwich?
Sort of south of Dulwich Village of course.

although this thread has reminded me of the idea floated a while back to travel the south circular by bus sometime...
You know how to have a good time ...

i hear there are some caffs and boozers near gypsy hill (i refuse to call it gipsy hill).
Beer Rebellion, lots of lovely beer, but most of the seating is in a basement which I'm not keen on, but beer is lovely and company usually lively. http://www.lateknightsbrewery.co.uk/bars.html
The Railway Bell - A Youngs pub

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten, there are actually a couple of breweries in the area now, I think in the Martell Rd trading estate. I haven't been back to Beer Rebellion since it moved next door to itself.
you live in gipsy hill.

bloody west dulwich... :rolleyes::D:p
It's been West Dulwich for as long as I can remember.

I used to have a friend who said he lived in Paxton Village. The poor lad actually believed what the estate agents said (in his defence he was Polish, presumably still is).

Paxton village is funny.

Idk, I think postcodes and the like are not necessarily helpful when you get to the edges and borders. It makes more sense to me to define where somewhere is based on how close it is to the various centres of each area. Which is why OU's gaff feels v strongly to me that it's more Gipsy Hill than WD.

The deli next to cafe rouge is ace btw, if you like cold meats and cheeses etc.

Just remembered that place.

Lol @ Paxton village. A roundabout does not replace a village green in making a village.

It is in West Dulwich though. Officially.
I come home via Dulwich, not via Gypsy Hill, so it's well Dulwichy to me anyway.

Well, I'm going to check out Beer Rebellion, Paxton, Alleyn's Head, the Rosendale and another on nearby that I forget
The Two Towers.

On Gipsy Hill there's also the Gipsy Hill Tavern, which is ok, big beer garden, and the Colby Arms, which is a locals pub. I've lived here for over 20 years and I'm still not local enough for that pub.

What about butchers and fishmongers? I think I saw a butcher on Rosendale Road?
Any farmers' markets nearby?

I did some exploring today.
Got a decent haircut at Chapters on Rosendale Road: http://chapterbarbers.co.uk
And next to it is Scotch Meats: http://www.scotchmeats.co.uk - which is a bountiful butchers full of delights. I got some massive beef and chicken kebabs for a BBQ this evening.
Then I got my lunch at Dulwich Bakery: http://www.dulwichbakery.com/Home.html - i had a Scotch Pie and a homemade sausage roll, which were excellent.
Next to it, is a posh ready meal shop called Cook for lazy ruddy faced hoorays - will probably get stuff there occasionally, but it's dear. Will have to be careful as they are the nearest shops, as well as the Tesco Express opposite, which is has a pretty good tramp's buffet and a better range (especially for booze) than most evil minisupermarkets. There is also Dulwich Books, which is well stocked and has friendly knowledgeable staff.
I had to go further afield to find a decent bee/wine shop, but I found an ace one, which is worth a cycle up over the hill to Anerley Road:
http://www.bobwines.co.uk - very friendly staff and good beer and wine, pitiful cider selection but decent cider nonetheless.
