Tell me about West Dulwich

Oh. I have thought of an actual useful contribution to this thread. If you're cycling, South Croxted Rd (the section between the Tesco and the roundabout at Gipsy Hill) is not good in rush hour because it's so narrow. You can go down Rosendale Rd instead, but that has hills; Alleyn Road is probably the best bet in your case.

well i suppose it depends where you are coming from and where you are going.
i kind of have to use that road ;)
it is a shitty road if you're timid, but the only way to ride down that road is to take the primary, ride fast and stop anyone overtaking. the limit is 20mph, so if anyone is trying to overtake you, they're breaking the law.

Avoid riding on S.Croxted road as its shit busy and being double parked there isn't enough room for buses and contraflow traffic at the best of times. Use Alleyn Rd or Alleyn Park, or Rosendale on the other side. You are also a small distance from College Rd (lower) which is a quiet, gated private road great for climbing practice and used by fuckloads of cyclists for commuter war I'm racing you but trying not to look like I'm racing you type riding.

I'd go mad living there but I think it's a nice enough area. Lots of parks nearby and of course, Dulwich Hamlet FC isn't that far.

It's on the number 3 bus route though and within walking distance from Brixton. I think it's the best of both worlds as it's quiet, but not far away from the bustle. And who wants a club on their doorstep?

Yeah, that was pretty much my take on the neighbourhood, & I ended up living there for 7 years or so.

People are right.. there's not much to do/see there. Pretty good transport links & lots of lovely green space though; used to walk through Bel Air park to Dulwich Park and the village.

I'd say the biggest downer is the monopoly that crap Tesco holds over basic food shopping, but if you're elsewhere for work, hopefully it's easy enough to pick up shopping on the way home.

There's an absolutely massive Sainsbury's in Crystal Palace too

Just cycled down South Croxted - it's actually fine when it's busy as traffic is slow and no one is trying to pass you. When it's less busy, ALL cars break the 20mph limit and try to pass you if you don't ride right in front of them.

I've found it quite useful so far - bigger range of wine than most local minisupermarkets and I got quite the haul in their tramp's buffet

Not you, clearly, but I very much like having the bars and clubs I like (and work at) - plus my favourite cafes and shops - being less than 5 minutes walk away. Plus I really don't like having to wait for buses.
