Tell me about smart TVs

That's about right (although if the app supports it you can use the phone whilst it's playing)

However if your buying new kit then that's probably a better solution. I worry that smart TV makers won't update apps, but it's not something you have to worry aboard for a few years and you can always add something else in future.
That is really my one concern. The Kiwi Idiot's smart TV has stopped working with at least 1 NZ TV app because it has updated beyond the capabilities of his telly. Reckon he's had it 5 years though. I am keen to get something that is not going to be obsolete in 5 minutes but that's probably difficult given the speed at which this stuff changes.

I would not bother with Now TV

My Freeview channels in the telly have more than enough and most of it (like Now TV) is fucking shit.
This is the thing.....my dad's Virgin subscription provided a huge amount of stuff I would never watch. I have no interest in sport and my movie viewing habits are not mainstream so the pay movie channels also don't usually offer what I want.

It allows you to use your phone to do everything, you just plug the cheap chromcast box into the back of the TV and control it from there. If the app supports casting it works very well, but if it doesn't then you have to broadcast the whole screen, which is a bit of a pain if you want to use the phone at the same time.

I think it's neat for the price, but find it much easier to access Netflix, Amazon and Iplayer via my PS4.
The PS4 is a great box for this, if itv hub and UK player could sort a app for it would be one of the best boxes available.

Sony's are the best imo as they are android and you can sideload wide range of apps and apks into them, far better than the limited number of apps and apks you can get from other smart tv providers.I like the picture on Samsungs but they have a different operating system.

You can only buy for now. I'd buy something with a really good picture and worry about the rest later.

Id like a 4k HDR screen, but tbh my old plasma still looks great to me.

Virgin are a company of cunts. I am stuck with them as the only good cable broadband round here.

There is so much stuff to watch that you just don't get time :D there are plenty of apps you can get 'pay films' on them. Really would not get ANY subscription unless you somehow run out of stuff to watch :D

Yeah the iPlayer, 4OD, Netflix and Amazon fulfill my viewing needs and I'll subscribe again to Curzon Cinema for more interesting films.

And I've got Virgin at least for the time being as that's what my tenants got installed - without asking permission to have holes drilled through the walls - but that's fine in the end because at least it's up to date and the broadband comnection is better than we used to have.

Yup. Can't see me getting this on BT

I don't think you need chromecast with a decent smart tv, they already have those apps and access to google app store, netflix, youtube, iplayer, spotify, tune-in etc.

True, but my understanding is eventually your apps will stop as the tech doesn’t keep up with the apps changing. So by having the cast or stick or box you save the need to replace the telly quite so often.

Why would I need a Now TV box for iPlayer/4OD when I can get that on a smart TV?

I get that smart TVs can be slower to update than the apps I might be using but I don't want any kind of subcription or anybody having to come round to install anything.

The time may come when I want a pay subscription again but I really don't want all that at the moment.

You don’t need to subscribe to use the now tv box, it’s not a contract thing. Use the free pass you get to sign up and then just cancel the sub, you’ll be able to use all the apps except the now tv bit. Also nobody comes round, you can buy the box for 15 quid everywhere, then take it out of the box and plug it in.

Or just get a smart tv and accept you might have to buy a new telly more quickly.

A side question on this. I have at least 2 old Sky boxes and a Virgin box in the house. How should I get rid of them?? The waste really irks me. For instance, my tenants left their Virgin kit including a router but I wasn't allowed to use the router they left with my new account - they had to send me a new one which is pointless and utterly wasteful.

Dunno about the rest but Sony's upgrade automatically. I get 4k movies via apps on mine. Its those cheap android boxes that you end up throwing away. Firesticks/TV are ok.

The apps on my Samsung upgrade automatically too. I think what purenarcotic is saying is that over time (just like with phones and computers) the hardware and built in software of the TV won't cope with the new apps and therefore won't get upgraded. At some point, the existing apps on your TV may no longer be compatible with what's being broadcast and then your apps won't work. As for the time frame, I'm not sure, but you'd hope it would be at least five years maybe a little longer.

Yep, that’s exactly what I mean. For me replacing every 5 years isn’t viable, it’s a huge expense, I expect it to last.

I need a telly - I'm using my laptop at the moment but I need proper a proper telly at some point.

What connections do I need?

I have an internet connection and I have an old Sky dish on my roof and there is also cabling installed for Virgin Media.

When I was at my dad's recently, he had Virgin and honestly there is fuck all on the proper TV that I want to watch that I can't get online so given all my TV watching is from online sources, is an internet connection all I need?

What about Freeview, How does that work?
Do smart TVs work via wifi?
What are the best ones on the market right now?

Cheers

You should be able to get Freesat through the sky dish so make sure whatever you get has that. If you don't have a standard aerial you won't be able to get Freeview.

They are essentially the same thing. Just different delivery methods.

So you need internet and aerial cable. That's all you will need. As said above any modern TV will come with everything else you need.

Stick with a big name and you can't go far wrong. Have a look at Richer sounds for deals.

I don't want to be changing my TV every five years either. The one before my smart TV was over 15 years old and was still working! :D The way I thought about it was that I might as well buy a decent smart TV with all the bells and whistles now and so long as it had enough connections on it to add a state of the art box somewhere down the line then I'd be able to use it for as long as possible. That's what I did with my old one - added a freeview box, Tivo or whatever as needed.

The screen is still good though. The smart gubbins can be supplemented cheaply and easily if needed.
This^^^
You can buy any number of Android boxes for small money. I don't even use the 'smart' part of my TV, I have it connected to a mini PC running Ubuntu and Kodi, which boots straight to Kodi. It's much better and faster than the TV's own software.

Sure I can see the logic but the 'at some point' isn't imminent. Most apps supply sources from 480 through to 1080 and some up to 4k ie they have sources that aren't cutting edge . You can pick up sport streams in different formats. The amount of 4k material is minimal yet the technology to view it has been out for yonks. I cant see mainstream applications like iplayer, netflix, amazon losing subscribers because their app no longer stream a certain content never mind the pirate apk producers. etc anyway aren't the vast majority of TVs produced now smart anyway?

Its about the apps staying current though. Try access Netfilx or Amazon with a two year old app on you phone...with so many smart TVs out there the apps simply stop being updated for older TVs.

When smart TV app support vanishes, what next? – Which? News

You can get some absolute cracking tv’s for £500. Including LG 55” 4K UHD sets (LCD not OLED obviously)

Keep an eye on amazon/curry’s/Argos deals if you can afford to wait.

With another bank holiday due at the end of August there will no doubt be some further reductions of stock of 2017 models.

If I see any good offers pop up in my twitter feed or email. I’ll post them them up.

Can't see myself having a spare 500 for a new TV for a long time, but how long do you predict it will be till you can get an OLED for that money?
