Tell me about...Reggae music

i've got that album, i'm pretty sure that very few if any of the tracks are actually by lee perry, they don't sound at all like anything else he's done.

yep, there's a world of dodgy Perry releases out there and i think that's on the list..

well i know sod all, but one band i can whole heartedly recommend is Misty in Roots.

Saw them live at Womad four summers back at the Eden Project.

Its the only reggae album i have besides a few bob marley albums but its well worth a listen :)

Misty were great - Live At The Counter-Eurovision is phenomenal - but last time i saw them they'd gone a bit 'holiday reggae', IYSWIM..

i like some old Misty in Roots tunes.

like Dub, most of my favourite reggae is from the 70s (and early 80s). recently i was listening again to Steel Pulse, a Brum band from back then. they've got their own sound entirely (imo) and are worth a listen.

i like Man in the Hills best of Burning Spear's albums. one of the best i've ever seen live too - absolutely stunning.

I'd add Mikey Dread to the suggestions others have made.

I like the mid 70s/early 80s reggae. I got into it via punk as it had quite a lot of influence on a number of well known punk acts. A good comp. I've got is -
'Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown'. Worth a listen as a good introduction to the sounds of the times.

I was channel flicking a couple of days ago an by chance turned to ITV - I normally don't bother as ITV is shit but so was everything else on at the time so I gave it a chance. Anyway, it was Airline (tedious shite about easyjet's airports) - I was about to give up and do something constructive when fuck me if Mikey Dread didn't suddenly walk on screen... Apparently he'd rolled up two hours late for his flight to Berlin (fuck knows what someone like him is travelling on easyjet for). Got pissed off because they wanted him to pay for a later flight - eventually they reached the agreement that he'd sing 'happy birthday' for one of their staff for free tickets, so you have Mikey Dread and a couple of his musicians singing happy fucking birthday in the middle of Luton bloody airport for some confused air hostess for tickets. Utterly bizzare. link

Btw for the Congos 'Heart of the Congos' is probably the best starting point, some truly classic tracks on their - Children Crying, Fisherman, Congoman, At the Feast etc. Great album.

Cedric Myton's voice is fucking brilliant... :D

Dillinger - Talkin' Blues
Dillinger - CB200
Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston
Peter Tosh- Legalize It

I was playing Funky kingston the other day and my mind transposed it (probably because of urban) to funky brixton....surprised no-one has reinterpreted it thus...

PS I love toots....even his cover of take me home country roads is a winner.
