Tell me about Peckham

:D

I love that Peckham is 'destination shopping' for hair, shankz and Clarkes Shoes.

Ace is like Harrods for weaves and potions. People come from Norf, Im telling you.;)

I miss Peckham :(
Ace has ACE window displays

I'm wondering if woolies will become the biggest weave shop in the world - that would be fab :D

if you ever come back to peckham melinda, give me a shout!

Yesss! :D That would be ace (groan).

Be warned though, I shall be leaving word of my whereabouts with family, just incase your Peckham instincts overwhelm you.

xx

I've just realised that there's a shop called "Dog About Town" very nearby.

Either it's a Korean takeaway (yay!), or it's some sort of awful dog boutique

Pubs:

Allbert - avoid unless you have the St George flag stamped on your person
Wishing Well - good solid pub pub. Show football often. Old and young.
Gowlett http://www.thegowlett.com/ - a favourite. Stonebaked pizzas, various (rotating) ales, generally young, they do a entertaining 45s nights where people bring they're 7" records and play them.
Montpelier - Really nice. Cosy. Good food.
Bar Story - near station, good outside section in summer, full of young arty types. Food is average. Manager is a bit of a tosser and staff change regularly.

Food

Ganapati - really good south indian food.
Lidl - this is now your supermarket of choice - enjoy.
Breakfast place next to Fenton Walsh - great fry ups.
Il Giardino - friendly little italian near station.

ps. i love peckham :D

I can bore you about the old days if that helps ? Jones & Higgins, Bill the Veg with his stall at the junction of Moncrieffe Street and rye lane but which is now the entrance to the cinema, the old Deli by the railway station that gave out a delicious smell of coffee beans roasting, the pet shop in the Arcade, Rossi's ice creams, the old fashioned Sainsburys with marble counters, Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon on the site which now stands the job centre, Wilsons bicycle shop (stil there I believe), the wet fish shop at the bottom of the lane that had large trays of live eels for sale.....(goes off into a dreamy nostalgia trip),

The thing was that when I was growing up Peckham and specifically Rye Lane enjoyed a reputation as a shopping destination. People would travel from all over London to spend their money in Peckham.

Now I just see it, and I concede that I have moved out a long time ago as an area that is getting grubbier and more run down by the day.

The area around Bellenden road certainly has something nice about it and its better than it has been for a long time but I do wonder how long it will last and Southwark with their draconian parking regulations are not doing the entire SE15 post code any favours what so ever.

I like being a Peckham boy and its one of those places that seems to endear a real fondness in those who hail from it but there is part of me that dies a little every time I am there and remember, with rose tinted specs, what it used to be.

Rye lane still is a shopping destination still, trying to walk down Rye Lane on a saturday isn't easy. There's big plans to do up the station, I think they're going to open it up so there's a big court yard at the front. Got agree that it's grubby at the moment, but that's Rye Lane. Bellenden road is very different and I'd recommend the Montpellier for Sunday roast, other pubs you could try are The Hope - Cornish pasties a pound and The Kentish Drover - what could be better than The Peckham Weatherspoons?

Cheers - it's interesting to learn about how it's changed :)

nothing to add, other than, the only time (in nearly 20 years of london living) that I have ever been chucked off a train (I was verrrrrr verrr drunk :o) was at peckham rye

I hope the train was stopped at the time :(

it was, the driver was the one who threw me off :o i had over refreshed and noticed at the back of the train was a driver's cab, so I opened the door and was in there messing about - the train stopped at peckham rye for quite a while :hmm:

then a big driver man, pulled me physically from the train, told me not to mess about (and not in a kenneth williams voice :() and the train left the station, I wandered drunkenly about in Peckam for a while before getting on another train and managing to stay on it to london bridge
