Tell me about carpets...

The only thing I have to say is buy the best quality you can afford. My dad's house has a very good quality wool in most of the house that has been down for more than 20 years and still looks good. He bought some cheap-arsed shit for his bedroom about 5 years ago and already it alooks appalling.

This is true, if you plan on staying somewhere. We don't which is where the cheap arsed shit isn't a problem :)

And tbh, compared to what was down, anything is better :D

I really wouldn't measure yourself.

Carpet is expensive, for the decent quality stuff. We just had an eye-watering quote from John Lewis for stair carpet. I think that costs more though because it has to be cut and "whipped" at the sides. The actual carpet isn't that much.

I've got the people in Dulwich coming to quote next week.... JL have already been. it is quite terrifying. I've given up on the idea of stair rods!

The annoying this is I got stair carpet a few years ago but the people at Allied didn't bother to ask if we had cats, so we got a looped one that the cats have destroyed. The bedroom one otoh came from JL and is still in quite good nick after 11 years, even though it's cream. At stupid self

C wants stripy carpet, but the nice stripes are loop and I keep telling him it's a really bad idea....

Is it really that expensive for stair rods? :( I wanted some pewter looking ones for mine and an outrageously bright carpet runner type affair under it.

I'd recommend going for a really boring neutral colour, unpatterned, in the best quality that you can afford - if the carpet is beige for the next 20 years, you can easily change the colour of the room with paint/wallpaper, curtains, bed-linen, cushions etc. If the carpet that you have for the next 20 years is bright orange, then you are pretty much stuck with an orange theme for that entire time unless you are going to tear out the carpet and change it every time you get fed up with it. (Yes I have lived with, and hated, an orange carpet).
