Teenagers, Music, Expectations of Relationships

Dubversion said:
Other teens might have been listening to music - perhaps disco or soul or pop - which is much more optimistic.

dunno if this fits into what you're thinking* Dub, but i definitely avoided 'miserable/negative' music when i was a teenager. i remember hating the music my bro was into, the Smiths etc (no really! :D ) because their view on relationships and life was so bloody depressing (imo).

i wanted to believe more, and better, was possible i suppose.

when i first came across roots reggae, i felt something resonated quite deeply - but that had more to do with how i thought about 'life' rather than relationships.

*erm...probably not then. :o

of course, the counter argument is that you listen to the music you do because of the worldview you're already developing (ditto books and films.. )
This is definitely more like it for me.

Heart broken? Listen to Janis, she knows how it feels.

Angry for no good reason? Listen to Black Sabbath/Motorhead et al.

Hormones out of control? Listen to Bon Scott being ridiculously sexy and imagine yourself as the Night Prowler :) See also Problem Child, Bad Boy Boogie etc

I would say so, yes, of course it depends on what kind of person you are too, how easily influenced, etc...

I'm not feeling very articulate right now and I'm having lunch, but the short answer is: yes. Just like films and books can also influence those expectations ;)

heh, as for how books influenced my view on relationship expectations....i wish i'd never read the bloody Bronte sisters. seriously, i think they had a negative effect. all that swooning - with brooding mysterious men needing to be tamed by the one wholesome and good woman.

whaddaloadofoleshit. :D

Well, I listened to a lot of Talking Heads and Pixies, whose lyrics were generally utter lunacy, so I don't think it told me much about love. I hope not, anyway.

I was always optimistic and cheery when I went out for a night, fuelled up by The Clash and the Pistols on the turntable, but when I trudged home in the rain alone my Blue Nile/Smiths/Aztec Camera albums never sounded better!

My early to late teens were spent listening to The Smiths, Billy Bragg, lots of other indie stuff which generally took a defeatist / dim view of how love generally turned out.
I was listening to Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Guns n' Roses, Dokken, Poison, KISS, Faster Pussycat, Ratt and stacks more hair metal bands with guys in heavy make-up.

Of course this provided me with a healthy insight into the opposite sex and has helped me sustain a long and loving relationship with my Good Lady Wife. :D

Then Country came along and changed all that, but it was too late for her by then. ;)

heh :D

Being the oldie that I am, I listened to Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Gene Pitney and Bobby Vee (sp)

I always knew I'd end up Running Scared and do my Crying in the Rain :(

so that would mean the ladies and gentlemen who listen to "field of dreams//happy hardxore" girly techno, helterskelter,STU ALLEN etc etc will have a very positive and healthy outlook on how their love life will turn out, and if listen to the lyrics carefully enough should remain faithfull "FOREVER".
heheheheh girly techno

silence!! do not doubt the girly techno :D I'm 17 and i love it

but then again i like; punk, ska, thrash metal, dub, bluegrass, reggae, dnb etc

Speaking from a teenagers point of view i can't really say that music affects my views on relationships much, altho as dumbo.66 says posotive music does help me keep a posotive attitude on life - However I'm not exactly an uber-stud so my view probably arent that valid :(

oh, don't worry spoone, girly techno is fun to listen to, but ska, metal, reggae etc is MUSIC that acctually means something. girly techno is jst funny and nice

I was an utterly angst-ridden punk teenager, hell-bent on heartbreak as an art form, as befits my Mancunian upbringing. ;)
I didn't expect much, and I didn't get it :D
