So am I the only one who sees room for a left libertarian reading of South park?

taking the piss out of all religions, r/wing hypocrisy about violence, sex and bad language in the media, media bias on TV news reporting, racism, sexism, homphobia?

Sounds to me like you just don't like the bits where they take the piss out of stuff that you care about or consider to be 'worthy causes' - doesn't mean that they are closet r/wingers you know?

But all that is entirely consistant with american r/wing libetarianism ( e.g johnny Canuck on these boards) - oppossed to restrictions on free speech, anti racism, pro sex drugs and rock'n'roll but also opposed to any restrictions on 'personal liberty' like gun control, tax, health and safety and environmental legislation, anti-smoking, parking meters - its essentailly saying you can do what ever the fuck you want to do but any notion of wider social/global reponsibility, or mutual aid, or solidarity is for liberal wusses.

They can be very very funny - the visciousness with which they attack the liberals 'establishment' is extremely gratifying - but they never go for the neo-cons in the same way.

So how about South Park the movie hero 'The Mole' waving a big Black and Red flag with 'La Resistance' written on it? Could this possibly suggest anything about the political sympathies of the creators?

To me what thats saying is we need an army to "protect" our country but the army can't be trusted to control itself so you need people who aren't bent on war to temper the attitude of that army so it's power isn't abused . To me it's a fucking sensible attitude to have and in no way right wing !

I was watching Team America out of one eye on tv the other day.

At one point, the two naked puppets are taking a dump on, and whizzing on each other's faces.

I couldn't remember that from when I saw it a the theatre.

I asked my kid: he said I must've seen the special 'director's cut'.

Team America and South Park are both sympathetic to a rightwing world view, but they are no less funny for it.

You don't have to read very deeply at all to see where the creators stand on things politicaly, at least- so long as you know what rightwing views are, nobody would express shock that someone could think Alf Garnet's a Tory.

Matt and Tray consider themselves reasonable guys, reasonably tolerant, the see 'Liberals' (like most Americans) as unrealistic amoral pussies who want to control everybody, and they see America itself as powerful and generaly good or well-meaning. Interracial relationships disturb them, they are strangely fascinated by pederasts and anything to do with faeces.
