teaching, is it worth it?

I'd say yes. I really enjoyed teaching. Only reason I'm not doing it now is cos there's no jobs in NI and I get paid to do a phd now instead.

I'm lucky I teach to university students and absolutely love it. I work in an environment where I am told 'OK that's the job, do it'. I get pissed off about three times a year (writing and marking exams!) But this is compensated for with the 14/16 weeks holiday, and the fact that I live in a pleasant town, in a lovely country. I couldn't do it in the UK though.

Perhaps, once you have completed your degree, and got QTS you could do a TEFL and travel for summer jobs? If I had my life over I think I might do this.

Primary kids rock! You don't know what you're missing...

Mopping up piss, for example. ;)

I couldn't deal with teenagers for all the Guinness in Ireland.

The kids are the best bit about the job! The bureacracy on the other hand is mind-numbing and crushing. the training is FUCKING HARD WORK, and it's no place for an idealist. If you're a pragmatist and you LOVE your subject and know how to handle it if 14 year olds are laughing and playing the x fancies you sir/miss (PROTIP: it helps if you have a childish sense of humour) then you'll be fine.

Spot on.

I (mostly) love it.

it climbs pretty quickly, and anyway, 21k is an easily livable wage in london (where you'd be paid more), let alone elsewhere.

Humm I used to do a bit of music teaching (but only along side a qualified teacher), it was quite hardcore but fun. I was wondering if there was anything I could do if I left TV but if you only get 21 grand then I would be fucked. What does it go up to? Is it worth starting at 35? I was told at a school the other day that they really needed music/science people.

I think I would rather teach infants though.

I've started at 35 and considerably higher up the payscale than M1. However, this reflects the teaching I have done before. Others I have known with professional experience have started at M2 or even M3.

Science is a real shortage subject though as far as I can tell - the science teachers at our school often stay less than a term as once they realise what they've got themselves into here - and given that they can pretty much land jobs anywhere else - they're off like a shot!

teacher pay details here

They mostly require more than one person! I do know some good websites for self practice though. :)

Please spill.

Im currently trying to teach a couple of kids some eigo but it has become a game of naughts and crosses and I am just drinking beer.

Ok what do you need to get in order to qualify as a teacher?

The reason i am asking is that my bro is more than likely coming back from Turkey after being a TEFL teacher for 6 months. He loves his job but they are messing about with his visa and there have been quite a few problems at the school he is at, he knows that he will need a degree in order to continue doing what he loves. But i was wondering what do you need to be a teacher here? He has total lack of GCSE's and no A levels either, he is going to have to go back to basics right but any advice gratefully received.

All you need right here :)

There's been a couple of recent threads about this too but I can't get search to work for me atm.

Teaching is great most of the time. Teaching English is a fucking huge load of work and sometimes I feel royally sick about everything I have to do. The kids are mostly fun. But English is, I think, the biggest work load.

Sometimes, I do find the thought of teaching utterly terrifying. Like now, for example.

ta sweety:) I shall send it to the bro.

I couldnt be a teacher (your not allowed to keep them in cupboards right?;)) but its the first time in Rob's life where he has enjoyed his work been interested and worked hard, it just feel a bit bollocks that he has to come home so if he does come home it should be because he is going to study and get his shit together. I knew he should have gone to China rather than Turkey.

Has he got a TEFL cert then? He doesn't have to come back if he doesn't want to - I went round the world teaching for nearly 10 years before I started my PGCE...He could try the British Council if he's qualified and he wants to keep going.

Are you his big sister by any chance? :p:D

i'm a knackered teacher who is struggling to get her head around social networking sites and noticeboards in preparation for a lesson on new media technology this week - this discussion is interesting. it's a great job - completely all-consuming, but you make of it what you will. i agree that the best thing about teaching teenagers is the teenagers themselves - you can learn so much from them and they are hysterical most of the time.

just completed a ways into teaching course
signed up to do 120 point with the OU this year and going to apply next year to do a BA in science teaching with qts
so by 2010 will be loose in a classroom :D
by the time I'm 42 will have a proper grown up job

Basically he only has a TESOL cert, he should have gone to China like he wanted too, but in order to keep mum from having palpitations he opted for Turkey. As it is they have been fucking him about for months, changing his terms, trying to pay him less, move him out of his apartment, send him to the arsehole of Turkey, not sorting his visa out properly, sending him to Antalya. And he is now kipping on the sofa of some teacher at HQ who took pity on him when he turned up to get his visa sorted out and had no where to go and no money. So he is coming home on thursday and i can tell he is hugely unhappy about it, after years of doing shit manual labour jobs he was finally happy and doing a good job. The problem is that he has no money left and we have all stumped up once already and none of us have anything left to give him.

Yeah i am his big (little) Sister who is hugely over protective of the 6ft lump, i am going to complain to everyone and anyone i can about American Kulture (the shifty cunts that employed him) to stop others from getting fucked over too. Their head of Education doesnt even have a teaching cert, she has a degree in Psychology FFS, they employ anyone who can speak English whether its their first language or not and they pay them a pittance (12TYR an hour!).

*rant over*

I am going to send him those links so he can get planning. Thanks FA:)
