Teacher Batters Pupil ....

I'm looking forward to the huge payout to the girl with plenty of red-top coverage of her looking miserable.

just awful. there's a lot of questions to be answered about whether his doctor should have allowed him to return to work, whether he was under pressure from the school to return - but at the end of the day, as a teacher you have to have responsibility for knowing yourself.

To be fair, when people have breakdowns, they are not in a good position to assess whether or not they are ready to return to work, simply because when people have breakdows they are in bits emotionally.

I also think it likely that the reason this man was so loved by pupils and teachers is probably because he genuinely and passionately cared about teaching.

A less caring, less sensitive, less eccentric teacher, who didn't care as much about the kids and their futures would probably have never gotten themselves into such a fragile emotional state as this man did.

It's just a sad story all round.

Although I keep wondering what the weapon was. They keep saying it was "an improvised weapon" on the news, which gives me the image of the teacher going mental with a sharpened toothbrush.

the teacher was clearly wrong

he should have slowly plotted his revenge and then at a suitable moment wheeled out a specially adapted van der graff generator

It was just a science experiment. He was showing the relative densities of a human skull and a 2kg weight.

Some papers are saying he was back at work since a stress related stroke. As strokes can do weird things to your brain I kind of feel sorry for the teacher too.

That's Coventry.

It's almost as far north as Carlisle in the North/South divide thing.

Watford, just outside Zone 6, is the limit of "The South".

Watford Met station is still in zone six, it's just the mainline stations (Watford High St and Watford Junction) that aren't. :p

I'd have thought (although my experience as a school governor was a while back) that the sweary young lady would be very lucky to get away with not being expelled, what with the mouthing off and the damaging of school property, so mouthing off to the press might not be too constructive.
Then again, anyone stupid enough to mouth off at a teacher in that way probably isn't over-endowed with the ability to consider the results of their actions.

This idiot appears to have hit the lad twice with the metal weight.

Jack is said to have then intervened and sworn at Harvey, who is then alleged to have taken the weight from a set of scales and flung it, hitting the boy in the forehead.
Jack is said to have fallen to the ground and the teacher to have stood over his pupil, before picking up the weight and striking him with it.
As Jack lay with blood pouring from his wounds, a boy and girl - both also 14 - reportedly dragged Harvey from his victim and restrained him.

If so, then clearly he wanted to do some serious damage to the boy. So, rather than being someone who 'lost it', he appears instead to be a violent coward who knew what he was doing.

or someone who just flipped out...

Considering the amount of stress teachers are put under and the daily provocation they face I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often.

Sad thing for both the pupils involved and the teacher. I would hope that this would lead to more support being given to teachers, but I suspect that what will really happen is the teacher will be vilified and even more pressure will be put on all teachers to 'prevent' this happening in the future.

That's how I get my revenge. The longer the chain of students the bigger the shock. Hours of fun.

Nah, I reckon he lost it.

If someone 'loses it' they don't first seriously injure a child by throwing a weight and then go over pick the weight up and further batter the child over the head with it, whilst the child was prone on the ground. Neither would he have needed to be restrained in doing further harm to the child by two other pupils.

If he had 'lost it' then he would have been brought back to the reality of his actions pretty sharpish on the first count I would have thought.

Why is it when someone ordinarily do this sort of thing to a child, they are referred to as scum and when a middle class teacher does it the responses are; they just 'lost it' or weasal words along the lines of; 'it's because of the amount of stress teachers are under'? Absolute bollocks.

If I were the parent of a child who had been seriously assaulted twice using a heavy weapon by a teacher in school, the only support for the teacher I would be giving, would quite frankly be at the end of a rope.

I'm against capital punishment btw, but I would see this as restorative community justice..

Yeah, sure... I can be told to fuck off but if I even whisper the word back I can lose my job you mean? I can be called a cunt but if I tell the kid they're ugly I can get dragged over the fucking coals for it? D'you wonder why people snap sometimes? Why people fly into absolute rages?

Everything about this incident strikes me as being about someone who, for whatever reason, got to the end of a teather and totally snapped. Totally - not just a little bit cross, but became something else. Perhaps you can't imagine that?

Yes, it shouldn't have happened. Clearly he's going to jail as a result. I'm fine with that - he should have walked away, called the girl a fucking cunt under his breath and smacked a filing cabinet or something. He didn't. He deserves to be punished for it.

But to call it premeditated is way too far imo.
