It used to be true, but with a definition of "central London" that was heavily biased towards north of the river. But it isn't true any more for newly allocated numbers - they even give out numbers starting with 8 to people living in central London, despite the social disgrace that still attaches to them.

There's only one or two a day that are direct (early morning) taking about 30 mins - otherwise you have to change and it's about an hour. We're doing this trip next week.

Taxi will take half an hour if it's early (i.e. before 8am) but probably over an hour later. If it's after 8am I'd get the train
