Tamil Protest Escalates

He also said that if the suspended Police officers are found guilty of the charges and lose their jobs then there could be a mass resignation of officers from the TSG.

Let's fucking hope so. Thuggish bullying cunts. The sooner they fuck off to ask 'fries with that?' the better.

They won't though will they? They've been recruited to do a specific job, which they do, and this is just a minor labour dispute.

I'm sure the officers concerned realise that the job isn't necessarily palatable to the general public and that occasionally, somebody might have to take the fall (full pension, sick leave, retirement, all the usual conditions of course) - they just want to make sure they don't get fucked over like they're being used to fuck other people over. Entirely rational behaviour on their part.

Its getting throughly annoying. Had to do some banking today in Horseferry road and traffic was a nightmare due to Westminster Bridge and square being closed around midday.

I was also caught up in the traffic on Friday and was narked but, you know whaw? it's tough tit on you and ditto on me. Theirs was a thoroughly peaceful, polite protest and more to the point, the nightmare their people have gone through far outweighs a little inconvenience to you and me. 'genocide' beats annoyance as a problem any day

to continually fuck things up people over an issue which has fuck all to do with this country
say WHAAAT? We created at last half the problem by our importing of a whole tamil nation to the then-Ceylon, and our decolonisation without leaving the tamils with adequately protected rights. One massively shot foot there.
And if it was Anarchists or similar then there is no way the Old Bill would be letting this happen. But because they dont want TV footage of them whacking non-whites its allowed to go on
utterly ridiculous.

Saying "importing of a whole tamil nation" is misleading as this represents only a minority of Tamils now in Sri Lankan. Most Tamils in Sri Lanka are descended from people who have lived on the island for centuries and had no connection with British plantations. For details see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Sri_Lanka

There were 25 years of independence where Sri Lankan governments imposed discriminatory laws before the civil war started.

Moreover colonial rules aren't indefinitely binding on a people when they become independent, nor can the UK impose any laws on Sri Lanka now.

You could also argue that race relations in the US are a British responsibility due to our foundation of the colony and involvement in the slave trade, but at some point independent governments and all political actors involved in a conflict have to step up and deal with their grievances themselves.

The 'solution' to Sri Lankan problems lies first and foremost in Sri Lankan and the UK's role - along with the rest of the international community - is just one of applying pressure. As far as I can see that is what it is already doing (I am open to a more in-depth anaylsis of UK policy). IMO the main reason there are protests in the UK and Australia is because that is where there happen to be large ex-pat Tamil communities.

float: I'm afraid I DID indulge in a bit of hype there!
re; your third para. No, but the colonial legacy sure plays an outsize part.
agree wi' rest of it tho'

I'm afraid these people are wasting their time, they were out gunned and they will have to live with it. It's no good protesting in a country thousands of miles away from where the action was. The UK Government is a toothless tiger without any clout !

Defeatist bollocks, the UK government can apply pressure through the international community to at least attempt to get some justice for these people. If they dont raise their voice then nothing will get done. The 280,000 people locked away in camps have no voice.
Any idea why the Tamil people are even over here?

Utter crap. The UK Government doesn't have any clout, it hangs on the coat tails of the US and kids itself that it is a major word power. The Tamil Tigers have been defeated etc etc, the tamils over here are in denial and taking out their frustrations on the police. I have no idea why the tamils are over here, it seems a bloody long way to come to escape oppression etc etc.
