Taking up Cycling - good idea?

However cycling around buses can be a bit annoying and breathing in all that exhaust undermines the healthy feel, so until you are a bit more confident / equipped with a gas mask, you might want to check the tfl maps for a quieter route.
That's why I stay behind them, unless they're stopped with people visibly getting on or off them

I love that video. Silly buggers, but what a rush

Fucking twats - I nearly got knocked off my bike by some wanker like that coming through the Vauxhall Cross bike tunnel cos he came round without slowing or looking - it turned out there was some race organised by a bunch of berkish art students

yes, the artycat most definitely ftl.

Oh right, it's not underground it's just the one that goes under the train station? :)

Yep - that's the one - one half of it is a foot tunnel - for some reason loads of cyclists don't use it and prefer to go into a dark curving tunnel that requires you to quickly change lanes if you want to turn right and is full of buses and HGVs

Did my first ride to work today, and am still not dead.

I quite enjoyed it although exercise at that time in the morning was a bit of a shock to the system.

Stick with it. You'll feel it the first week, but your body will adjust. I tend to dawdle in the morning so as not to arrive all hot and bothered, then crank it up on the ride home.

Enjoy your new found freedom!

JESUS!!!!! I watched half of that youtube video and had to turn it off. My nerves couldnt take it.

I am also considering taking up cycling(again).
Yes we have been here before and you all gave me some nice advice but after getting a bike that was too big and struggling to find another one I gave up.
I have been looking around and I still have no idea of what bike I should get. I am very very small and I think I will have to get a childs bike :o but i'm not sure that these are road worthy  Edit: like this one fro example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverfox-Fantasy-Speed-Girls-Mountain/dp/B000N6SR4C
Any tips? advice?

When I am cycling, I will need to go from oval to clapham common, its a fiarly simple route isnt it? not too hazardous... how long do you think it should take? 10 mins?

Oval to Clapham Junction is a nice easy commute; Clapham Road is a big road but not an unpleasant one to cycle, and there is a bike/bus lane. If you're going in the morning you'll be against the tide anyway so should be quite nice.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a mountain bike; I don't know much about the options for small bikes (I'm 6 foot+ tall) but mountain bikes are generally harder work to cycle (fat tyres = more friction) so if you want a town runaround I'd get a road bike, or there are loads of "hybrids" which are sort of half way between the two but are mostly designed for roads (or the ones I've tried seem to be).

yes, i think you're rigth there (as if i would have a clue :D)
I thought that maybe I would get that bike because i know the frame will fit me and then upgrade the tyres
will have a look around at tyres and things now

Actually I think the best thing to do is to go and try out a good range of bikes - bike shops will let you take them out for a try if you leave security. Bikes are like clothes; there might be one that ticks all the boxes techncally but for some reason just doesn't feel as good as another one.

I've only once bought a bike on its spec and price rather than on feel and I just never bonded with it - I ended up trading it in about a year later.

Good luck with it! It's a good time of year to get into it.

yes you're right. i'm pretty confident that i will only be trying out mountain bikes though as i doubt most shops will have suitably sized hybrid bikes in stock. thanks for the advice co-op :)
