Taking coppers to the bank

imaginationdead said:
A few years ago I took about £5 in coppers into the bank, not in money bags just in a plastic carrier bag - the cashier looked annoyed but accepted it!

I've now got another £10 or so. Can I go into the bank and ask to borrow some of the little bags? I don't know how else I'd get them.

You can, but if they ask if you have an account at that bank then you must lie and say yes. If they ask for your card, say you've left it at home as you didn't realise you needed it.

Time was when banks would do it for anybody - now they no longer pretend to give a shit about the communities they work in, they feel fine about rejecting the simplest of services unless you are one of their customers.:mad:

I've got several jars at home full of 2ps and 1ps, & I want to take them to the bank, b'cos i could do with the money and they're just taking up unecessary space.

Do banks still accept coppers?
Or do I go to the post office?
And do i have to put them all in those little money bags?

Sainsbury's have them machines where you just pour all your coins in and it counts them for you and then puts like 7p of it to charity or something and gives you a receipt.Then you can exchange that for cash.It's pretty quick.I've done it a few times where i've really needed the fuckin money.

While we're here discussing entirely legal things to do with coins...

I seem to have found what feels like more than a kilo of French francs :o

Anyone any idea if I can give them to a charity or something?

How is it not legal to melt coins? :confused:

Precisely because, from time to time, the metal value exceeds the face value.

So if it weren't you could make a lot of money out of the government, taking pennies out of the bank and selling bronze to the Mint :)

Though the legislation probably dates from the days of gold sovereigns and silver shillings that were supposed to be an L or an S worth of metal.

Well I never.

I just wondered how it was illegal to melt coins but legal for the KLF to burn a million quid of notes.

Apparently it's illegal to push the middle out of a £2 coin, too :cool:

Applications for authority under section 10 of the Coinage Act 1971, should at least include the following information:
  • details of the coin you propose breaking up or melting down;
  • the reasons for wanting to break up or melt down the relevant coins;
  • name and address of the person who will be carrying out the work and where;
  • a statement from them explaining in detail what the process involves; and
  • the number of coins you envisage breaking up or melting down.

Brilliant :)

Lets' see... shall we gather all urbanites' pre-(insert year) bronze coin to make a sculpture?

personally i wouldn't take coppers to the bank it's an extravigance and a waste of taxpayers money too boot. use a credit card if you really don't feel safe using cash or making deposits or telelhpone banking...

I know that Barclays will take them, whatever the amount, as long as they are bagged up into Barclays bags and you are a customer.
seconded. i always take mine into Barclays and they change it with no fuss. you do need an account with them though (or to show them a barclays card when you change it). i do it quite regularly and have found them happt to do it each time.

Sainsburys have a machine that gobbles up the change and gives you a voucher that can be used in the shop. I got £11 last time I took some to the shop.

Ah I see you get a voucher - I thought there would have to be something in it for them. Still I think I will do this with ours.
