Taking a holiday on the dole

hazyp said:
Well, I work in the Jobcentre, and I know that if you go abroad your claim is definately shut, and that would include housing benefit too.
I'm not going to argue outright with the pro as it seems a bit of a lost cause, but surely it couldn't hurt to check with the council about having the HB continued even though the JSA has stopped?

Look see, I did my homework! :)

I did schedule the holiday with that in mind, I go on the day I sign and come back the Sunday before the the next one. I was worried more about the extent to which information's shared these days. If they won't have a clue, that'll be sound.

I very much doubt they'll be able to find out. They're not after all investigating a suspected offence, so presumably wouldn't have the powers to cross check external databases.

Oh....well I work 'down the dole'...and I cant afford a holiday!!

with respect thats got nothing to do with what im saying if you can, or your friend/ relative wants to take you then you should be able to go without being penalised.

Yes..we all know what we should be able to do...but try telling the goverment that...and anyway, if its a holiday, could you really be bothered to return anyway? I know I wouldnt!!

Oh they need to revue loads of stuff....I mean, if someone fails to attend an interview, they can get a days money stopped. But instead of just suspending their claim, which would mean a push of a key, what do they do? They insist on the claim being closed, which then means it has to be reopened the next day..more paperwork, more time wasted..oh I could go on...but I doubt you'd want me to!!

They can't manage to work together when someone is both working and claiming JSA. If they could track your passport but not make two systems like that work together to easily find the fiddlers, then something is seriously wrong!!

fiddlers? Its not fiddling going on a holiday its what you should be allowed to do If the rules were more reasonable then people wouldnt need to be secretive would they?. Extremely outdated you can move around Europe looking for work now anyway.

Why not READ the OP properly??

well said why drop comments in that have nothing to do with it. It dosent matter who is paying for the break its irrelevant. If your relative/friend says I will take you on a weeks break to Spain and pay for you you have to say no im not allowed we can only go to Weston Super Mud or Sunny Bognor:rolleyes:

there is, or used to be, something called reciprocal arrangements which means that you can go to any country that has an agreement with the UK in order to look for work and recieve your benefits there. Have to inform in advance though

Where did I say he shouldn't go on holiday?

I just said if they can't manage to work out when someone is working and claiming at the same time, then it's unlikely they are going to discover he went abroad.

Oh where do I start?

If you go on holiday abroad, then the rules are that you have to be in the Uk looking for work. You can go abroad to attend an interview, but you have to give checkable details of where you are going, and you have to return immediately after the interview, as you would in the UK.

If your claim is closed because you have gone abroad, then a letter is fired off to the local council telling them your claim has been closed, so they will know.

The fact is, that you have to be available for work at all times, according to your Jobseekers Agreement, so if you went to USA for instance, you wouldnt be able to return the next day for an interview.

There are lots of rules again about going abroad and claiming benefit while you are over there, and I cant remember the exact rules, but I've never known anyone able to do it, despite all these new agreements with other countries, as there are so many clauses, and there is usually one for the DWP to get out of paying!!
