which I'm able to do without being as po-faced as some of the commentators on this thread are appearing...

Fine. However, po-faced pretentiousness is a big thing amongst many of those who take them seriously. Indeed, I'd hazzard a guess that SOAD are the first experience of supposedly right-on music for many of their fans. Shame! :p

BTW, beards, poetry, long noodling solos, concept albums, fine carpets on stage, vocoders & highly-committed politics are usually asociated with another form of rock - ie Prog!

my nephews and neices like them.

Can't say I've really been able to distinguish them from all the other adolescent rock that my nephews and neices like, which all just sounds exactly like the stuff I was into at their age.

I think that's incredibly patronising.
They're a relatively popular band who have politics, yes. However, I very much doubt that people who hear their music have never heard about politics before
I'm pretty sure that any for whom that is the case are probably uninterested in the politics anyway, and are unlikely to have their fragile minds unduly affected by whatever it is you consider to be dodgy about their politics.
Anyway, what would be better? Kids all listening to Dead Kennedys and Minor Threat and Fugazi? (actually, that'd be fine :D)
Just please no Earth Crisis or Shelter

I was just gonna ask what "right-on" metal bands would be acceptable...

:D

Obviously, not counting those listed above, who aren't metal

Are there any right-on metal bands?
The best I could come up with was punk- I've never really thought of metal as political because, well, I mean, who takes it seriously :D :p ?

E2A- Earth Crisis are Matalcore, according to their wikipedia entry....

That is the pitiful thing about it, these kids tend to get all fired-up about how "good" SOAD are politically, when they have instead comprehensively sold any credibility down the river several times now.

I also wouldn't have to put-up with hours on end of their crap being played in the labs!

Yes, DK et-all would be fine! :D Except that the SOAD kids are more likley to be the sort who a few years back were all into Gong etc. :p

I've only heard Chop Suey.

Weird Al does a polka version, thats better.

You really have to hear Richard Cheese's lounge version, that track is pure class, a brilliant song in it's own right.

DKs not metal by any stretch of the imagination, though. Hardcore Punk, yes...

I think they are classic.Their new stuff isn't as nuts but they are still a decent metal band.

I was listening to their first album round your place before you all moved out. you guys had a pretty decent sound system IIRC

I keep forgetting how you snuck into my home when I wasn't around...

I miss my hi-fi - I sold it all before I left.

Mark got some of it but couldn't get it to work properly.........so he sold it to Em.

Oh - BTW, if you are still in touch with Mark, give him a bell - he is in hospital with a pulmonary embolism (!!!!) and he is bored as fuck........

THough It doesn't touch his version of "Insane in the Membrane"

they're ace!

but then i've only heard one album and it's about 3 years old... and i'm useless with names, so you'll have to guess - lots of chanting sodomy if that gives you a clue (well that's what i heard anyway!!!)

i just like the eerie jewish kinda vibe ()

I thought it was Armenian rather than Jewish & their stance on Armenian issues was about the only part of their politics that was in any way commendable?

I know that this is a bit Noddy like but WTf does their name mean?
It comes from a poem written by Daron Malakian called "Victims of a Down", Serj Tankian thought "System" sounded a bit better, so they went with that.

They are of Armenian descent yeah. P.L.U.C.K. is all about the Armenian genocide, IIRC.

Can't see why anyone would have any problem with their politics from a vaguely left POV. A bit liberal and propaganda model focussed for my tastes, but not bad.

Maybe because they utterly take the piss & contradict themselves on almost every issue they opine about?

The stupid opera voice is frankly embarrassing.

And for all their supposed anarchist stance ....

chop seuy is not fair to judge them on lyriclly its easily the most comerical song they have ever released. they are a decent band have in the most part ok lyrics and tend to put a bit of bounce in the riffs.

tis all i ask for. I fucking love em.
