System Idle Process = 98% CPU Usage = 40% ??

Bob, well done for finding that

Dravinian, check the event viewer, to see if it shows errors with your hard drive.

If the problem happens again, then try using a different IDE cable.

If it still continues, then it is probably new drive time :(

Event Viewer? Where would that be :p

I think I might have a spare IDE cable.

Cause it just went back to PIO mode.

Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event viewer.

Click on System to see the events.

That ain't a pretty sight.

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation."

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period."

These two, Error and Warning, just littering the last 6 days from the 10th of September.

Will try changing the IDE cable now.

Well I found a new IDE cable encased in Rubber no less, never seen anything like it, I can see why I left it in the box, as well its not very flexible, what with being encased in rubber.

I unplugged the CD/DvD drive for the time being, to see if that puts a stop to the problem (by doing this I was able to straighten out the IDE cable a little bit)

Will see how this goes for a bit but am ready to change cable if it goes again.

*installs speedfan*

Very useful thread, well done that Bob, and good luck with the problem Dravinian

I know its been solved(i think) but 4 process for your antivirus???

Your not doing anything silly like running multiple antivirus programmes are you. If you are it would cause slow down.

I was actively running the Virus program at the time, ie I had a window up with the selection of bits I could run, and i had another window up and the updater was running in the background as it had started automatically when I started the program.

Once the scan was complete, or when I stopped it,there was just the 1 process for the Virus program.

Well put in new cable, going to go through running the list of programs that seemed to cause it to go back to PIO now and see what happens.

Absolutely just hammered it by running every program that I thought might be the cause of the problem.

Seems fine.

My PC is not ready to give up the fight yet.

6.54am I am fast asleep, my machine decides there is a problem on the harddrive...striaght back to PIO.

Getting worried the drive is screwed, but can't seem to find anything to suggest that it is.

^

Could be motherboard playing up either at the socket or deeper in, could be the cable, could be the socket at the hard drive end. Whichever option it's not great and a bitch to diagnose/fix.

Yeah I changed the IDE cable, it lasted ages, I changed it when I posted, and it only failed last night at 6.45am. Which was about 18 hours without failure. Plus it is annoying cause I was asleep at 6.45am. The PC shouldn't have been doing anything.

I meant to ask as well, I have a spare Harddrive (another one that I can plug in at the same time) can I back up to that HD, since i Have no burner or anything.

And if so.

How would I do that?

The simplest way to back up your files, would be to drag them to your other drive.

However, if you want to clone your drive (so you don't have to reinstall windows and all your apps etc), then you'll need some kind of back up software.

I really hate starting again on Windows, takes months to get everything back to where I want it and even when you think it is all done, you do something you not done for awhile and realise you have to spend an hour setting that crap out as it was before too.

Still, it is nice having a clean machine. I might do a proper install and seperate OS drive, Install drive and download drives, with a big fat music drive. At the moment everything I have is spread around and its a bit of a nightmare.

You know thinking about, I think i might just back everything I want to keep to another drive, and then live with this til it breaks so completely that I can't make it work anymore. If it is simply a matter of Uninstalling the IDE drive once in the morning and it lasting most of the day, I think I can live with that for the time being.
