System Death ?? I hope not

KeyboardJockey

Clowns to the Left of me
I'm trying to boot up my Ubuntu Linux Breezy Badger system and I keep getting the error message

'Kernel Panic'

Does this mean my system is totally fucked beyond help or is there some way round this.

The system boots but is a bit shaky in windows XP but it won't boot at all in either Ubuntu 5.10 or the old 5.04 systems that I've got on the drive.

I'm going to be really pissed off if I've lost my data. It's bad enough with my ex screaming at me about Linux being a 'bogus' operating system

What was the last successful operation you did with Breezy...? Have you added any hardware/software...? Can you boot up with a Live Disk...?

You still live in the same house as her...?

I've installed an HP Deskjet 600 printer onto the printer (not USB port) this isn't successful as the carriage moves back and forth but doesn't print  and I installed some software to allow me to save .ram files. Prior to the problem I had just gone over to XP without any problem to play a quick game of Doom. When I went back into Ubuntu I got the Kernel Panic error message. I tried hitting DEL and going into set up but when it opens the set up page (the blue one for changing bios settings etc etc ) it just shows the first page selected eg advanced cmos features and then freezes

It freezes in the CMOS screens...? Sounds like an overheating issue... If you turn the computer off completely and wait for a bit and then boot it, does it boot up...?

I looked at the PC health screen and it said 95 celcius. I didin't think it was a problem until over 120?

I've tried putting the Ubuntu Breezy CD into the drive and booting and I can't access the CD so I can't re install Breezy at all. Would it be possible to use Knoppix in one of the cd drives to drill down and rescue my data then wipe the Breezy partition and start again?

Depends... What cpu do you have. But 95 is a bit on the high side... Have you checked the fan inside is running ok...?

Can you not access the Breezy CD, or can you not access the CD drive...? Oh, and please answer the following. (If you don't answer questions completley it will be impossible to help you...)

I can get the drive open and it spins up but there is no way for me to access the Breezy CD.

If I turn the computer off - leave it for a while and then re boot it comes up with Kernel Panic cannot syncronise and some numbers. And that is as far as it goes

Is the computer setup to boot from the cd...?

Oh no! Its a brand new HD as well only installed a few months ago. fuck fuck fuck

It's been getting progressively worse on boot up for a while and has to keep being restarted to boot sometimes three or four times.

Well... It could be the memory instead... Reset the boot order and use a live disk to boot up. If that works it will most probably by the hard-disk. If you still get problems it might be something else like memory...

So if I use the Knoppix Linux Live CD I can access the drive and get my data off. I'm seriously pissed off about this as come to think about it the drive has started to make noises lately but it is a brand new 80gb drive from a computer fair. Only three months old as well.

This is why you don't buy from computer fairs...!

I've seen a Seagate 80gb drive for 36 quid including delivery whaddya reckon on that would that be a better bet than the Maxtor one that's in there at the moment.

95 celsius? That's bonkers! That's the maximum operating temperature for most CPUs - my laptop gets stupidly hot, but shuts itself off at 70-75, and normally runs at 55.

I'm going to double check this when I get home but I'm convinced that its normal running temp is normally between 75 - 95. I think I should have said Farenheit :o
