Syntax Era: ZX Spectrum and BBC Micro, the movie

And by contrast, the C64 Powerdrift was superb but the Speccy one was shit.

Funny at the time, I thought that the C64 version of Powerdrift was ace.

But recently playing it on an emulator, I nearly had a epileptic fit with a huge amount of fuzzy sprites randomly crashing about the screen. It's really unplayable.

Yay, I was a right Spectrum geek, and I often had access to a BBC Micro as well, so this should be right up my street.

Whilst we wait, here is Micro Live from 1985 featuring a drum machine addon for the Speccy.

"It's like a word processor - FOR DRUMS!"

:D

Hey Hey 16k

M J Hibbett And The Validators song, Rob Manuel (b3ta) animation.

It's been posted on urban before but deserves a mention on this thread anyway.

I'm really looking forward to this, can't get enough ZX Spectrum nostalgia me. I remember back in the day all the C64 owners being jealous of the Ultimate titles which were only available on the Speccy... I owned the original 16k rubberchips then sent it back to Sinclair to upgrade to 48k a year or so later.

It was a great little machine for learning basic programming. The fact that it only had one channel of sound and two colours per character just meant the programmers had to get inventive.

I remember the PCW show in 1986 when Crash magazine was going up against C&VG in the 'sexy tips girl' sticker wars, damn I feel old now! And there was a great BBC documentary about the downfall of Imagine software, which hopefully will get another airing if the beeb get fully nostalgic about the era.

Now I'm going to go and read up on Matthew Smith (Manic Miner/JSW) and Jeff Minter, that old hippy from Llamasoft, and see what they've been up to! So many memories... what Rob Hubbard did with the sid chip on the C64, some of his tunes rocked.

I had a BBC - it's what got my brother into programming. He went on to work on Burnout Paradise amongst other stuff.

Virus was great - another David Braben creation.

*is still waiting for Elite 4*

He did? Next time you see him, tell him that instead of the party pack, additional cars and new island expansion thingy, how about working on a proper splitscreen mode for round the same telly multi-player fun.

Without a doubt it's the worst thing about the game, only having online multiplayer...

I only had a philips video pak and a vic 20 while everyone had specys and 64s.

I still have and use my Atari 2600 though.

I remember playing the game Zarch on the Archimedes and being amazed by it.

I also remember being bitterly dissappointed by the Amiga version of it (Virus Hunter?) - still playable, but nothing like as fast...

OMG I remember playing that at school on the Archimedes! It was the Best Game Evar. Because it had guns and spaceships and was in no way educational.

We had RM Nimbus.

They most exciting thing about them was the loading screen. :(

And in primary school something called "Smile" on a Link machine.

Yeah, but he's not responsible for the bits you don't like though :)

It was called 'Lander' on the A3000 wasn't it?

You can't beat a game of 'Grannies Garden' on the BBC though - I can still hum the theme music, even though it must be 20 years since I played it.
