Syd Barrett is dead

When I was 17 I asked a girl out in a cemetery by saying 'You're the kind of girl who fits in with my World. I'll give you anything, everything if you want thing.' She said yes. :)

But not right away. :D

RIP Syd

:(

:D :D

Syd.
I'm sad.

Why fighting?
I've read one thread thru and then two joined together. Did I miss a mention of how much the remaining Floyd paid tribute to Syd and drew inspiration from him ?

Shine.

I didn't kinda realise how sad this news was until I read someone earlier saying how much he'd given them. Same here. My late teens were filled with time listening to Syd and Floyd. And I don't rate them without him. They lacked a certain soul after he went. RIP.

An old fart comes late onto this thread.

Well I am very sad to hear this news:(

feel like another bit of my almost childhood has gone.:(

I used to see them playing petty little clubs around Leeds when I was 15/16 ( about 40 years ago):(

Set the Controls to the Heart of the Sun - was that one of his?

doesn't matter really - we are all the poorer for his loss:(

RIP SYD.

Jesus wept.

I always hoped he would kinda come back...but I guess he probably won't now, innit.

RIP you crazy diamond.

and as he looked almost unrecognisable from his 'Syd days' I imagine he walked past dozens of fans who simply never realised who he was. From what I'd read, I'd be quite surprised he attended any festival at all in recent years.

Just catching up here. Yes, it does seem odd that he would go near any festival. But my brother's friends, who lived just round the corner from him, insist that he's been seen. This could have ben any time within the last 15 years though ...

i disagree with the 'total recluse' bit. it seems a bit tabloidy. he just kept himself to himself from all accounts, like many people do. i know someone who lived near him. people saw him out and about, going his quiet way - but i don't think he liked people that much.

he called himself Roger though, and didn't want to be associated with Syd Barratt apparently.

Yeah, sorry about that lazy 'total recluse' phrase on my part.

I was talking to a bloke in the Live and Let Live last night, he knows my brother a bit so recognised me from some old Folk Festival probably. Said he'd seen Syd/Roger in Cherry Hinton Road within the last two weeks, out buying baccy!

So yes he did go about his business.

Haven't heard these for years, would like to give them another go now.

If you go within earshot of my house tonight you'll hear them blasting out of my living room windows.:D

...as they did out of ours last night, to the horror of the neighbours. :D

(but actually, the parts when Syd was speaking and fucking up now seemed a bit kind of exploitative, somehow) :(

Who this Syd Barrett that people are fawning over?

Is it the old burned out acid freak named Syd Barrett? The rich kid who started an R&B cover band called The Pink Floyd Sound, then eventually wrote some songs, made one album and did a disastrous abbreviated U.S. tour back in 1967?

Used to drive the other members of the band mad because he would do things like tune his guitar in the middle of songs instead of playing the riff. They hired another guitarist (David Gilmour) to cover for his bullshit and eventually dumped him. Is this the same Syd Barrett?

Made a couple of very mediocre solo albums, although most of the studio tapes were incoherent rubbish. Then ran out of money, sold the rights to his solo work and lived the last 30 plus years of his life in his mother’s basement. Spent most of his time painting or gardening, relying on his sister to shield him from the outside world. Was thought to have suffered from schizophrenia or asperger syndrome, although Gilmour noted that he became instantly very lucid whenever the royalty payments were a bit late.

Best remembered as the "inspiration" for a band that went on to achieve fame and fortune (despite being purveyors of dirge-like crap) .....although his own body of work was less than a handful of productive years.

And so his wasted life ended recently.

Sad .....but hardly cause for celebration.

Has it occurred to you that a thread memorialising a recently dead man who was admired by a lot of people here probably isn't the best place to start attacking that man from what appears to be a position of total ignorance?

Well, of course it has, but you're just soooo controversial, aren't you?

I don't think I have ever seen a post so full of crap.

I hope you have some links to the Gilmour rayalty claims?

Why do you think he was a rich kid?

Middle class certainly but he spoke posh because he was brought up in Cambridge.

His father died when he was young and his mother made money from putting up students in her house.
