belboid said:and as he looked almost unrecognisable from his 'Syd days' I imagine he walked past dozens of fans who simply never realised who he was. From what I'd read, I'd be quite surprised he attended any festival at all in recent years.

he called himself Roger though, and didn't want to be associated with Syd Barratt apparently.

Is it the old burned out acid freak named Syd Barrett? The rich kid who started an R&B cover band called The Pink Floyd Sound, then eventually wrote some songs, made one album and did a disastrous abbreviated U.S. tour back in 1967?
Used to drive the other members of the band mad because he would do things like tune his guitar in the middle of songs instead of playing the riff. They hired another guitarist (David Gilmour) to cover for his bullshit and eventually dumped him. Is this the same Syd Barrett?
Made a couple of very mediocre solo albums, although most of the studio tapes were incoherent rubbish. Then ran out of money, sold the rights to his solo work and lived the last 30 plus years of his life in his mother’s basement. Spent most of his time painting or gardening, relying on his sister to shield him from the outside world. Was thought to have suffered from schizophrenia or asperger syndrome, although Gilmour noted that he became instantly very lucid whenever the royalty payments were a bit late.
Best remembered as the "inspiration" for a band that went on to achieve fame and fortune (despite being purveyors of dirge-like crap) .....although his own body of work was less than a handful of productive years.
And so his wasted life ended recently.
Sad .....but hardly cause for celebration.
