Syd Barrett is dead

I don't think he was on that one.

Twas.

Riot Sky posted lyrics from Jug Band Blues that he wrote.....

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.
And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song.

I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the winter.

And the sea isn't green
And I love the queen
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?

Syd Barrett was locally rumoured to have been seen at both Strawberry Fair and the Cambridge Folk Festival in relatively recent years. My brother knows the street he lived in, but has never seen him himself I don't think. But Syd seems to have been almost a total recluse.

i disagree with the 'total recluse' bit. it seems a bit tabloidy. he just kept himself to himself from all accounts, like many people do. i know someone who lived near him. people saw him out and about, going his quiet way - but i don't think he liked people that much.

he called himself Roger though, and didn't want to be associated with Syd Barratt apparently.

I think Jug Band Blues MAY have been the only song he wrote or was properly involved with on Saucerful of Secrets though ... would need to check ....

I think Saucerful of secrets was the 'crossover' point with him and Gilmour but he was still involved.

and as he looked almost unrecognisable from his 'Syd days' I imagine he walked past dozens of fans who simply never realised who he was. From what I'd read, I'd be quite surprised he attended any festival at all in recent years.

Roger was his real name. Roger Keith Barrett. There was a drummer in a band in Cambridge called Syd, i presume Barrett looked like him so people gave the Barrett the nickname Syd.

you started it. i should have thought this was the wrong thread to say you prefered floyd without him...

RIP Syd. :(

I was being honest not posting up angry smilies and flaming you twat.

So, is this becoming the 'Floyd were better with/without Syd' thread since the General thread seems to be the place for the RIPs and generally respectful postings?

I'm getting mine in first - Floyd were good, whimsical and the rest of it with SB but were a better band musically and lyrically after he left and were able to pursue a wider musical agenda after he left the band.

I see them as two different bands with the same name. Well, three actually if you also count when Waters left.

They also had more soul in their music once he'd left.

only on the one track - saying he wasnt really involved anymore. So 'one album' seems a fair description.

A good lad, will be missed.

Not really. He probably contributed more to that album than Ringo Starr contributed to any of the Beatles albums with the possible exception of Seargeant Pepper. :)

And I don't really see how calling someone a 'twat' isn't flaming but whatever! :)
