Syd Barrett is dead

RIP Syd...think Floyd were better without you, but the whimsy genius that inspired songs like 'Bike' will be missed...

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like, it's got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it! :D

:(

:( :( :(

:(

It'll be all over the Cambridge Evening News tonight, what with him living back there with his mum since before 1980. I'm going there this evening, will pick up a copy for a different perspective ...

The Division Bell really is shit though.

I don't think it's that bad, it aint classic floyd but it's far and beyond better than the shit other bands of their age put out.

Syd Barrett was locally rumoured to have been seen at both Strawberry Fair and the Cambridge Folk Festival in relatively recent years. My brother knows the street he lived in, but has never seen him himself I don't think. But Syd seems to have been almost a total recluse.

Will they name a park bench after him? They do that in Romford after a local dignatory dies :(

Hmmm.. undecided. Mind you, I heard the new Who single last week - man, that really was shit.

Too bad, the only Floyd stuff that I liked even a little bit was the Syd Barrett stuff and I liked some of his solo stuff as well - I always thought he might do a Brian Wilson and come out of retirement someday!

Bless his cotton socks :(

Syd was the only only musician I've ever been obsessed with and probably ever will be.

The man was an artist not a rock star wannabe like Waters and Mason were desperate to become.

He was pushed way beyond his limits by the demands of the greedy side of the band. He suffered numerous breakdowns and yet waters and mason didn't really give a fuck. The tory Mason still talks about Syd with a certain arrogance that he wasn't pulling his weight.

The man was a genius....for a short while.

I'm saddened to hear he will never do a Brian Wilson and return to playing publicly and do a bit of a comeback (even though I know it was never possible).

I can't believe people are saying PF is better after Syd. The post Syd Floyd were mainly good but still their music felt like it was being painted-by-numbers whereas Syds music was free, intuitive and ingenious.

A desperately sad story.

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.

this is worse than when John Peel died :( :(

from cancer apparently :(

Cancer??

The Guardian piece (posted earlier in the thread) claimed 'complications related to diabetes' -- not mutually exclusive, but I'd have thought they'd mention cancer all the same :(

Either way, very sad news :( .... there's another thread on Music ....

When I woke up today
and you weren't there to play
then I wanted to be with you
when you showed me your eyes
whispered love at the skies
then I wanted to stay with you
inside me I feel alone and unreal
and the way you kiss will always be
a very special thing to me...

When I lay still at night seeing
stars high and light
then I wanted to be with you
when the rooftops shone dark
all alone (I) saw a spark
spark of love just to stay with you
inside me I feel alone and unreal
and the way you kiss will always be
a very special thing to me...

If I mention your name
turn around on a chain
then the sky opens for you
when we grew very tall
when I saw you so small
then I wanted to stay with you
inside me I feel alone and unreal
and the way you kiss will always be
a very special thing to me...

I've just seen what appears to be a fairly recent photo of him and he was very overwieght, so we can presume the Guardian might be correct.
