Switching from MS 2000 to XP - what will I lose?

Don't know what your processor speed is but you're on the lowest realistically usable amount of RAM.

Will you be using it for anything other than web browsing and email reading? If not then you'll be alright but it will run slower than 2000.

I'd be tempted to post on the freecycle forum as someone may have a much better spec machine going free, maybe with XP already installed. I have one but I live about 100 miles from Brixton.

The hard drive should be fine. If you're going to start taking your machine apart it's going to get technical and it's easy to confuse different bits of kit that are only slightly different.

This isn't sounding good at all :(

Web browsing, email, saving and uploading of photos and videos mostly

How big is the hard drive and how much data do you need to back-up?

It might be easier to create a partition on the hard drive to store all of your data.
Having two seperate partitions, one for the OS and one for data, should be standard practice.

You can then format and re-install OSs on one partition whilst preserving all of the data on the other.

I meant putting a new hard drive in

That's what I meant. It's only a case of maybe moving one link on the back of each of the drives and doing up a few screws. Then you'll need to format and partition it... really not difficult - only a few simple commands.

The new drive will probably be several times the size as the old one - you may be able to get a suitable one cheap.

There will probably be room to have the old hard drive as a slave.

Since you'll be opening the box to put more RAM in anyway ...

Computer is split into two drives, a C and a D drive.

C drive has 18.6GB used, with 6.77GB free
D drive has 22.7GB used, with 7.70GB free

I built mine in 2003 or 4 I think ... it will need the motherboard to blow up for me to upgrade it.

Athlon 1.33, 3/4 gigs RAM, 40Gig hard drive, 2 meg broadband - does absolutely everything I need it to.

Then back up as much as you can on to the D drive, as this will not be affected when you install the OS on the C drive.

you know Minnie's talking about a "laptop" dontcha?
I think you mean "ye olde worlde lapetope". Minnie should start each one of her PC problem threads with a cave drawing of her laptop so everyone can appreciate the era which spawned her indestructible machine.

Hello good people - again

I've decided to get a couple of those pen drive thingies. Now I don't want a 16GB one just in case it fucks up and I lose lots of data so I've decided to get maybe a few 4GB ones. Now obviously there may be compatibility issues with my ancient machine.

Could you please advise/confirm that with buying any of these, I wouldn't have any problems?
