Sweeny Todd Anyone?

Yuwipi Woman

Whack-A-Mole Queen
I was hesitant to see this, but was glad to see that the malevalent darkness of the movie was favored instead of the gore (although there was plenty of that).

Loved the costuming. The film was almost black and white except for little splashes of color here and there. Usually it was blood but sometimes a shining victorian dress would pop into color along the edges of the film.

The singing was ok. I don't think either of them have great voices, but it was enough to carry the film.

Got this one at home.
Is is worth a trip to the cinema?

If you are an intensely visual person then you might like to see it on the big screen. If you are more of an aural person then I'd save it.

I rarely go to the cinema due to cost/comfort/smoking and my distaste of being close to other humans.

I might just do it at home :)

May I borrow after you? Or we could have a session? You, me, your wife......ok I'll invite him too! ;) :D

I have the same issues. Luckily Sweeny Todd isn't the type of movie to attract the seat banging, pop swilling, and cell phoning crowd. Mostly it was a small group of similarly nerdy geeks like myself.

Am I dreaming or at work?
Is it all finally happening?

Saw it on Saturday, it's ace. Not only was it better than I expected, it was better than I thought any film of Sweeney Todd had a right to be. The cuts from the stage version were sensible and the extra dialogue scenes helped too. Nine slashed throats out of ten.

I was with Alex B and concur entirely. I thought the Epiphany scene was even better than the George Hearne stage version, and that's saying a lot.

I can't wait to see this - one review I read said Johnny's voice was David Bowie, but Helena was more David Gest. :D

He does veer into Bowie, but not all the time. Rickman has the shakiest voice, but I'd prefer that the voices were a little shaky than they were dubbed.

Sacha Baron Cohen is very good :D

Nope - I don't really care for Sondheim - not melodic or bombastic enough
I also find it difficult to suspend my disbelief in modern musicals

You don't know the play but you don't care for it? How do you know?

You prefer older musicals like, say, West Side Story?

I don't care for anything I've seen of his (on film, not stage), and what I've heard from Sweeney sounds crap
I'm not so keen on WSS either TBH

So you've not seen any Sondheim on stage? What Sondheim have you seen on film? Just curious.
Nope - I don't go to the theatre
I've seen A Funny Thing Happened....
I've heard various songs as well, as I used to work in a kitchen that had Radio 2 on all the time.

I don't like A Funny Thing Happened either. It doesn't do a thing for me. Sweeney Todd on the other hand is a work of genius. If you write Sondheim off on the basis of one film, you're missing out.

It's really very, very good. Complex, funny, frightening, interesting, dark. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you let yourself.

I didn't expect to like the film due to too may dissapointing recent Tim Burton films and a vague dislike for what little Sondheim I had heard before, but I'm a Sondheim convert now and the film also restored my faith in Burton. :)
