Call of Duty ‘swatting’ death explained.

Gamers get into a row and one idiot calls the police claiming somebodys been murdered and the killer has hostages police roll up and shoot a completely innocent unarmed man.

This was bound to happen the practice of swatting calling the police claiming theres an active shooter at an address to get a swat team response has been going on for awhile sooner or later it was going to end in a death:(.

The idiocy was part of 4chan/gamergate style culture:mad:

Whoever made the call is responsible for murder.

That is true but sooner or later you call out a Swat team claiming theres an imminent threat to life this is going to happen it was only a matter of time :(.

SWAT team varies from highly professional to coppers cosplaying with all the kit and no idea:facepalm: and still get called to high risk situations.:(

No, the police are responsible for the murder. The caller is responsible for other crimes relating to wasting police time in a malicious way.

Yeah we know what the term means. I think the point is that police don't have to just take an anonymous call at face value and shoot the shit out of someone.

It is more serious than just wasting police time. But the killing was the result of trigger happy police. They shouldn't be allowed to divest themselves of responsibility by turning the story into a news agenda item about internet kids.

bout the third or fourth story I've read in the last six months where the explanation for the trigger pull was that the dead man 'made a motion similar to', basically 'he looked like he was reaching. They shot a bloke on his hands and knees begging and used that excuse. They'd basically say 'hand up' then shoot you for moving your arm.

Don't be silly. There was no murder. At an extreme stretch whoever made the call might face a manslaughter charge but even that's highly unlikely.

There's no clear intent unless you've read otherwise elsewhere. The caller would say he just wanted to cause trouble for, or frighten the victim.

It's the US, I'm sure they'll be able to string a few offenses together and get a 300-year sentence.

They've arrested the guy who made the phone call.
It's really sick...he phoned saying he'd shot his father and was holding hostages...gave the innocent man's address and hung up. He used software to mask his voice and hide his own location.
    Really horrible

    It's a legitimate question though isn't it?

SWAT teams go into violent situations. It's their job. But are they trained to negotiate?
Police are supposed to be trained in negotiation....even though evidence would show that they are inclined not to negotiate.

My understanding is that pretty much everyone who is trained to fire guns at people is taught to kill them and that shooting to wound isn't practised by any military or law enforcement agencies.
