Sven RESIGNS..Will Go After World Cup

Does that mean he's coming to Villa and bringing Beckham? Was it all true?

Seriously hope not. We had the second youngest squad in the premiership last season. Now we seem to be moving towards a Boroughesque retirement village for has beens sort of senario.

Thing is, i reckon everything Sven said in the interview was true, Rooney is from a poor family, Rio is lazy...and the industry is DEFINATELY full of bungs.

The NOTW are utter cunts. I wouldn't blame Sven if he said "fuck ya'll" and done one before the world cup leaving us managerless.

Fella has been well stitched up.

He thought he was talking to a billionaire.

A guy like that could fund the FA for 10 years just for a hobby. If he asks about Rooney you answer.

But the plain fact is...yet again...fucking tabloids constantly at the England Manager.

I feel guilty about buying it for the free Highlander DVD now.

Oh well, that didn't last long.

Hard cheese Sven but this is Engerland mate, it was gonna happen eventually. If he can get us to the Semi's he'll have done well I feel, and can go back to club footy where he really wants to be.

Fuck though, what next after Sven?

I've never really liked Sven that much , he has a good record but ...

You really think so?

Quarter finals at last world cup and euro championships was about average i'd say.

Qualification group this time around ... yes we won comfortably but it was a very soft group. Again about par.

Couldn't he do us all a favour and just leave now?

Hated the man for ages, he plays crappy football. I would rather watch england lose under Terry Venables then watch them win under Sven.

Was getting really tired of watching England games hoping that England lost just to hasten his demise.

He weren't too bad, but I can't wait for England to have an ENGLISH manager again.

So, who would you choose, then? Allardyce? A blustering fool who would embarrass us by representing our country on the world stage. Curbishley? Boring git who is happy for his team to achieve mediocrity and stay there. Pearce? Promising and has got city playing reasonably (compared to before he came in) and motivated. But way too soon. Pardew? Has worked wonders turning a squad which I thought was going to be stuck in the Championship for years, back into a top 10 premiership side, but again, hasn't even been mentioned. Jewell? Has already said he wouldn't want the job. Bruce? HA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

Nah, I'd go for Johnny FOreigner again - either Guus Hiidinck or Felipe Scolari.

What an own goal!

The best manager England's had for years has been hounded out by the the English press in the name of pointless tabloid-shifting 'stings' while the team morale will no doubt plummet downwards as a result.

I agree. Everyone slags Erikksson off, but if he gets us to the semis this time, he'll have been the most consistent manager since Ramsey.

How soon they forget.....

Speaking as a Welshman, I wish this could have happened before the qualifiers, as we could have used a bit of disgruntlement in the England camp before our games.

I wonder if the tabloids realise they have probably cost England their best shot at the World Cup for decades? And what new manager would want to get the same kind of grief dished out to Sven?!

Yep, I agree with both those points. I'm seriously annoyed. WHatever Sven's failings in substitutions, he had attained a relative level of competence and, barring a couple of dodgy defeats, consistency. And I think he would have built on the previous two tournaments by getting us that bit further this time.

Very good point from this Guardian article:

By succumbing to the hysteria whipped up by sections of the media, which took a man's foibles and exaggerated them into something out of all proportion to the reality, the FA has thrown away a chance to reap the rewards of a period of relative stability. Having allowed itself to be swayed, it is back in the state of chaos and despondency that existed when Kevin Keegan walked out of the job one rainy night at Wembley in October 2000.

F*Ck I hate the tabloid press...still it has happenend, though a little bit of me thinks it may work in our favour....no matter what is said I still think the team respect and admire Sven....I have a feeling they will up it when it comes to the finals, as a send of for him and against the way he has been treated.

Well according to some this "best squad for years" can just turn up and "almost run itself" don't you know  .
Fucks sake the cupboard is bare English manager wise and I agree, I'd go foreign again, I reckon the FA will do so. Scolari will get the nod IMO and I'd be happy with that, his record is decent.

There are no decent English managers - Big Sam zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........McLaren? Have you seen Boro play? Curbishley??? Can't manage any sort of dip in form.

Pearce isn't ready - lets see if City do as well next season and then decide.

Hiddink would be a good choice - great tactics, knows how to manage big players from his Madrid days.

Mind you Souness needs a job :D

Why is Pardew never mentioned in these discussions? He's worked wonders to get West ham back up, and also playing attractive football. Most odd.

(Still, I'm not complaining, I want him at West Ham!)

I've a really nasty feeling that the FA is going to employ Steve McLaren. And that won't be pretty :(

ps. If Souness gets anywhere near the England job I will personally torch FA HQ.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I've never really been a fan of Eriksson's, but England's results in qualifying have been good under him, with the highlights being the 5-1 in Munich and the draw in Istanbul. There were some shocking results such as Northern Ireland away and Macedonia at home, but overall you can't complain as we have qualified for every tournament under Eriksson. Our record in tournaments has been about what we expect really, not quite good enough to go all the way. His lack of tactical awareness and faith in non-entities like Owen Hargreaves has always grated with me, and he's lucky Rooney came along during his time in charge. I really hoped that with the squad we've got now we had a good chance of doing well this summer, however now I'm not so sure. A colleague of mine, a Tottenham fan, was at a restaurant on Saturday and Paul Robinson, David O'Leary and, bizarrely, Chris Moyles were at the next table. My mate had a chat with Robinson, who told him "we're in with a chance (of winning the World Cup) as long as Sven keeps his mouth shut".

I can't decide whether yesterday's announcement will demoralise the squad, or motivate them to give Eriksson a good send-off. Whatever happens, the News of the World have done a proper stitch up job, and if their antics have harmed our chances of doing the business in Germany then their sales figures will surely plummet. I think they may have grossly misread the mood of the nation with this one. Love him or loathe him, Eriksson's job was to build a team capable of winning the World Cup, and he has been seriously undermined by the NOTW's pathetic "sting". We all know Eriksson is a whore who would sell himself to the highest bidder, but does anyone believe that Venables' head wouldn't have been turned by a rich Sheik?

The NOTW will of course be giving it the big "Come On Boys, You Can Do It!" leading up to June. Yeah, no thanks to you, you money-grabbing stitch up merchants. I for one won't be buying that rag again, and I hope many others follow suit. Why does our tabloid press feel the need to derail the best chance we've had since 1966?

As for post-World Cup, who are we going to get. My heart says he has to be English, but what are the choices? Allardyce has been fantastic for Bolton, but is he international standard, and will his style of football suit the England team? Curbishley I think would be a better option but I'm still not sure he is capable of making the team any better than they are now. McLaren hasn't done too well at Boro this season, but by all accounts he is a very good coach. Derby went into freefall after he left them to join Man Utd, and it's been said that Fergie hasn't ever found a proper replacement. However, he's involved currently, so would he be able to take the team any further? Pardew maybe in the future, but I can't see West Ham letting him go, or him wanting to leave to be honest. Pearce will be England manager one day but not yet. I'm sure Venables will be mentioned but his time has gone. I think the FA will go for another foreign manager. I think Hiddink will be top of their list, but I've heard that Fabio Capello is looking to leave Juventus at the end of the season, looking for a new challenge. Watch this space.

Editor, could I just point out that "Most Successful" does not mean the best.

Starbucks is clearly a fine example of this.

Sven is another, his style of football is crap, score a goal, then sit back for 89 minutes desperately hoping your opponents don't breach your defense that is sitting on your 6 yard line.

Yeah any team playing in that style knows you can have a decent looking record, for one, you might steal a few games, two you likely get a LOT of draws and three you barely lose.

Yet they all also know that these are mid league teams that are happy not to lose anything and sit in the middle of the table.

England isn't a middle of the table team, we have some of the best players in the world. We shouldn't be going out there looking to remain at number 12 of 24. We should be going out there to be number 1 of 24.

As I said in my earlier post, I would rather watch England lose while they are out there trying to win, then watch another Sven attempt at a draw.

Your better off without him, he hasn't got a clue tactically or he hasn't the ability to make the right changes that are goin to win a game for ya when backs are to the wall.

The reason England are so successfull under Sven is because they have one of the most talented squads in international football, very little to do with him.

He doesnt even do the coaching, thats left up to McClaren.

I cant realy say much tho', at least hes better than the manager we have. I'd still take Sven over Steve Staunton

Peace

Why would Juve take Sven? His record wasn't astounding at Lazio and they couldn't wait to get rid of him?

Sven for Newcastle :D :D :(

compare us when one up against Argentina and Brazil when one up against us from last world cup.

We sat in our own penalty area and prayed.

Brazil didn't let us get the ball - even though down to 10 men because goofy had been sent off.

I'm not sad to see Sven go but agree with those who don't like how it's happened

Is it wrong and unpatriotic to point that whilst England are good....the reason that they didn't win the last World Cup is that.

THE OTHER TEAMS ARE BETTER?!

Wasn't outstanding for Lazio? He won, I think, seven trophies while he was there, including their first ever European trophy and the league and cup double in 1999/2000. For anyone outside the Milan/Inter/Juve triumverate, that is outstanding.

Sven won the league once

And took the European Super Cup (the charity shield of world football)

The Cup Winners Cup - the LDV has more prestige

Italian Super Cup x 2 (see, pointless)

And not forgetting the highly irrelevant Italian Cup 3 times.

During his final season Lazio were languishing, achieving nothing and Sven was told he should probably head off to London a little sooner than expected.

Most European football journalists that I've read through, don't rate him.

And his England record?
Sure looks pretty impressive to me.

i think so. qualified for two world cups and one european championship in a row, and topped the group on all three occasions. weren't even expected to qualify for 2002 world cup after Keegan's mess.

beaten Germany once and Argentina twice, which is always nice.

lost to eventual winners of World Cup in 2002 and host nation in 2004 (on penalties) and got to quarter finals on both occasions.

sure, there's been some dismal performances under Sven and a bit of bad luck but you can't play like Barcelona every match in international football.

just hope England can make the next step up come June.
