Supervising MSc students - aaarrrhhhhh !!!

grrrrrrrr!!!!
it ain't the MSc students that are the problem, it's the damn supervisors!
they're all on bloody holiday at the moment and my stress levels are soaring dramatically!

disclaimer: a slight derail, i admit. but i wanted to moan & this is the closest thread to accommodate such moans.

One of the library assistants here used to mark undergraduate sociology essays, and she told me that some of the kids would cut-and-paste so crudely, the cut-and-paste would still be in the same font as the place they'd copied it from.

I sent this to a lecturer friend of mine who replies:

"Nothing surprises me; in fact we had a case a few years ago when an undergrad doing his final year project photocopied pages from a Masters dissertation on a similar topic and just bound them into his project report. He didn't notice that the supervisor of the Masters dissertation was in fact his own supervisor for his project and would, therefore, mark it!"

And her husband, also a lecturer, adds:

This is a giveaway for various overseas PG students as well. I've caught various students this way - one of the reasons being that my PC supports more fonts than the average student's machine. The text looks OK to them, but not to me...
